Conversion Chart The metric system is the preferred system for medication administration and is used exclusively in the United States Pharmacopeia. The basic units are multiplied and divided by a multiple of 10 to form the entire system.

Abbreviations The following are the preferred abbreviations in order to minimize medication errors Metric System Kilogram: kg Gram: g Milligram: mg Microgram: mcg Kiloliter: kL Liter: L Milliliter: mL Centimeter: cm

Apothecary System Grains: gr Ounce: oz Fluid ounce: fl oz

Household Measures Drop: gtt Teaspoon: tsp Tablespoon: tbsp Cup: c Pint: pt Quart: qt Gallon: gal Pound: lb

Equivalency measures 1 drop = 0.0167 mL 1 tsp. = 5 mL 1 tbsp. = 15 mL 1 cup = 8 fl oz = 240 mL 1 pt. = 2 cups = 16 oz = 480 mL 1 qt = 2 pt. = 4 cups = 32 oz = 960 ml 1 gal = 4 qt = 8 pt. = 16 cups = 128 oz = 3840 mL 1 gr = 60 mg

Note: a) 1 oz is 30 (mL if it is liquid, g if it is solid

1 oz = 30 g 1 fl oz = 30 mL 1 inch = 2.54 cm 1 foot = 30 cm 1 kg = 2.2 lbs 1 kg = 1000 g 1 g = 1000 mg 1 mg = 1000 mcg 1 L = 1000 mL

Microdrip Tubing 60 gtts/mL Macrodrip Tubing will be supplied can be 10, 12, 15, 18, or 20 gtts/mL

b) 1 L is 1000 mL but 1qt is 960 mL

Conversions in the metric system Converting from kg to g to mg to mcg is done in terms of 1000 which means that: 1 kg = 1000 g 1 g = 1000 mg 1 mg = 1000 mcg The same works for the measures of volume 1kL = 1000 L 1 L = 1000 mL 1 mL= 1000 mcL When converting from kg to g, from g to mg and from mg to mcg in decimals, move the decimal point 3 places to the right. Example: 7.5 g = 7500 mg When converting from mcg to mg, from mg to g and from g to kg in decimals, move the decimal point 3 places to the left. Example: 650 mcg = 0.65 mg From larger unit to smaller unit move decimal point 3 places to the right (= multiplying by 1000) From smaller unit to larger unit move decimal point 3 places to the left (= dividing by 1000)
