STUDY GUIDE FOR “WALKOUT”

1. What problems did the students experience? The students experienced being constantly mistreated. They couldn’t speak Spanish in school without getting punished and they did not get equal treatment, opportunities, or education. 2. How did their treatment by the schools affect them? It affected them negatively and caused them to take action and start boycotting classes. 3. Why did they decide to take action? They decided to take action because they were constantly being mistreated by their teachers and principals. 4. Would one person, acting alone, been able to resolve these problems? Why not? One person alone would not have been able to resolve these problems because if multiple people are coming out and coming together with the same problem, then others will know that it is a big deal that needs to be resolved. 5. What sources of power did the students have to resolve these problems? They used their voices to voice their opinions and to retaliate against the police. They also made posters to hold and yelled different phrases. 6. Who were their opponents? What sources of power did the opponents have? Their opponents were the police and principals that resisted them and beat them whenever they got close enough. The principal had inside information that he was using and discussing with the police, therefore, the police were able to stand outside and wait for the students to walk out because they knew all the details. They also had batons that they were using to beat the students with. 7. What strategies and tactics were used by the students in their organizing effort? The students stood up in the middle of class and started yelling about walking out and they ran down the halls banging on doors telling others to walk out. 8. What were the risks and benefits of taking action? The benefits were that they could gain peace and get equal rights for everyone. The risks were that they got beat and arrested by the police. 9. Do you think that the boycott was ethical? Why or why not? I believe that the boycott was ethical because the students remained peaceful the entire time, EVEN when the police were beating them and arresting them. They were also just standing up for what they believed was right, therefore, there was nothing wrong with the protest. 10. What actions on the part of the school system should the students have anticipated? The students should have anticipated that the school would call the police because the students were boycotting class and walking out of school. 11.. What was the role of the media in the boycott? Did the media seem to portray the students’ actions accurately? Why or why not?

The media and news articles did not portray the boycott correctly because they stated that the students were resisting the police and attacking them when all they did was walk out of school. The police started beating and chasing the students, even when they tried to run away from them and go back into the school. 12. Ultimately was the boycott successful? In the end, the boycott was successful because the more the students did it, the more people started to participate. The parents and other people of the neighborhood also started to join in towards the end. 13. Was the outcome for individual participation and for students as a whole worth the risks to individual participants? The outcome was worth the risks because, in the end, the boycott solved problems for everyone as a whole. The individuals who got arrested should feel proud because they got arrested for helping resolve a problem and it benefited everyone as a whole. 14. What recent events were inspired by this film? Other student walkout protests in 2006 helped inspire this film. Also, the protests/walkouts in 1968 helped inspire this movie....
