CALENDAR COURSE DESCRIPTION This course emphasizes tools, techniques and social components of project management. It applies the widelyaccepted PMBOK set of standards (Project Management Body of Knowledge) to the analysis and study of project management. The course uses a chronological approach to project management and explains initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, and closing projects. Using group discussions, case studies, and exercise simulations, students will learn how to apply tools and techniques of project management to navigate a project to a successful outcome. COURSE OBJECTIVES Learning Outcomes 1. Identify and assess what constitutes a project 2. Describe the role of the project manager 3. Describe project management and discuss key elements of the project management framework, 4. including project stakeholders, the project management knowledge areas, common tools and techniques, project life cycle and project success s 5. Analyze the relationship between project and portfolio management and the contribution they make to enterprise success 6. Assess and apply the five project management process groups to a project 7. Describe the typical level of activity for each process group, and the interactions among them 8. Project Closing EVALUATION A final course grade will be determined based on the following instruments and their corresponding weighted percentages: Assignment(s) 10% Midterm 30% Term Project 20% Participation/Attendance 10% (this includes class exercise grp presentation) Final Examination 30% 100% Methods Of Instruction Lectures, case studies, exercises and group discussions will be used. Group work: A large component of this course is based on group work. It is the responsibility of the group to let me know if someone is not 'pulling their weight' well in advance of due date. Class Cancellation Policy In the event that a class is cancelled due to instructor illness, weather, or other unforeseen circumstance, a notification will be made through Blackboard. It is the responsibility of students to be proactive and to check their announcements and/or email before coming to class. Every effort will be made to ensure that the notification is made as soon as possible. Please ensure that all email sent through Blackboard is directed to your personal email. REGULATIONS FOR STUDENTS Attendance and Participation: Students are expected to prepare for, attend and actively participate in all class sessions, and online exercises, to sit the required tests and final examination, and to submit assignments as and when required. Students are responsible for ALL materials. This also applies to any announcements made in class. If you cannot attend a class, ask other students if any announcements were made in the missed class. Students are also responsible to check Blackboard e-mail and the course website for messages and updates.

Late assignments/projects/quizzes: Late work will be given a ZERO MARK with the exception of extraordinary circumstances or prior arrangements with the instructor. Student Conduct: Any student who displays disruptive or dangerous behaviour will be asked to leave the classroom/lab by the instructor. Such behaviour will be classified as misconduct. Late Policy: The Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration has passed a policy regarding students who go to their classes late. The policy is as follows: “Learners are expected to be on time for class. Arriving on time is a matter of respect for the instructor and fellow students. Late entry disrupts the learning environment. After due warning, students who are repeatedly late for class can be prohibited from entering the classroom until there is a natural break in that day’s class.”

Final Exam Rules No entry into the exam room if you are more than 30 minutes late. No extra time will be allowed in case of late arrival. No leaving in the first half hour of exam. No cell phones during exam – if you are seen with one in your hand, you will get an automatic 0 on the final exam. TURN OFF cell phones. Place your ID on the desk so that instructor can verify your identity. NO BATHROOM BREAKS. Once you leave the exam room, you MUST hand in your exam. Nothing on desk except pencil and eraser. No talking during exam. Write clearly; if I can’t read what you wrote, the answer will be marked as incorrect. NO CHEATING – keep your eyes on your paper only. If I see anyone looking at someone else’s paper, both students will get 0 on the paper. Sign out when you leave. After leaving the room, observe silence in the corridor area. Other people are writing exams.
