Motherhood brings many new challenges, as Bohrman, Tennille, Levin, and Rodgers explain how low-income mothers are affected by problem drinking and intimate partner violence( IPV). Bohram et al. argue are that through therapeutic intervention, women can be a catalyst for change by recognizing barriers and using the power in a narrative to improve life circumstances among them and their children. The result showed that the constant theme in the reports was how the women felt how they “should” behave to recover. (Bohram et al. pg 707). The study included analyzing 32 women between the ages of 18 to 64 through audiotaped sessions conducted at an urban emergency department to find the causes behind alcohol use and the correlation to IPV. Methods used included a 20-30 minute motivational interview from a randomized selection of women between two urban academic emergency rooms/ trama centers of mothers living with children under 18. (Bohrman et al. 2017). The majority of the women were black, single, and had low income. Through feminist standpoint theory and motivational interviewing, researchers discovered different narratives that stem from structural and systematic forces that contributed to multiple stressors such as sexism, poverty, and housing. (Bohrman et al. 2017). Bohram et al. mention that further studies are needed to help women understand how behavior constrained by societal norms can help assist the issue of excessive drinking and IPV. Multi-level approaches can help remove some barriers, such as resources, to help secure stable

housing. The strength of this article did highlight key contributors that affect mothers, such as stereotypes, sexism, and racism. The motivational interview method helped mothers understand how children are involved, raised reasons why they feared leaving their partners, constructed what being a good mother represents, and connected with how their parents raised them. The weakness is that there are limitations in sample size. Larger sample size could measure alcohol increase and decrease during motherhood and specific ages of children. It is homogeneous in terms of race, so researchers could not explore differences in other ethnicities and races. This article is relevant to my research because it presents issues linked to substance misuse in mothers, such as IPV and the role of motivational interviewing.
