Write a 300-400 work analysis describing the qualities that make the particular work Cubist. With a work of Cubism you will want to discuss the way the subject matter is fragmented, and also the texture and handling of the paint and brushstrokes. Your analysis should also display an understanding of key qualities of Cubism, and whether the work is Analytic or Synthetic, and why. Please do include the image file for the work you are writing about in your submission that includes the artist's name, artwork title, and date.

Cubism originated in the early 1900s by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. Cubism creates paintings from geometric shapes and simple subjects from different perspectives and morphs them into one subject of human form. Cubism is very abstract and employs a certain professional vision and analysis in order to fully understand the paintings. Portrait of woman in d`hermine pass (Olga) by Pablo Picasso is a cubist piece that was constructed in 1923. This piece is considered cubist because it was made from a variety of different perspectives. Picasso used many perspectives of the same subject and brought them together to broaden the context of the piece. This particular oil painting shows a morphed woman. She is clearly different than an average looking woman, yet it is still recognizable in form. One eye is faced front, the other sideways, and the mouth is also on a slant, almost as it is from the perspective of a sideways view of a face. Although there are five fingers on the hand, they are more lanky and less straight than real fingers, they bend in an inhuman way which increases their abstractness. This piece is clearly synthetic cubism because synthetic cubism is described as the subject being reduced to simple shapes that are built on top of eachother, which this painting accurately describes. Analytic cubism, however, is when the subject is broken down into flattened planes and sharp angles. When analyzing this particular painting, it is clear that the subject does not have sharp angles, but rather fluid characteristics and lines. Portrait of woman in d`hermine pass (Olga) depicts an average woman in an anything-but-average way. This is the goal of cubism- to depict an average subject in a way that makes you question what it really means....
