Today’s prevailing society and innovations in technology have shaped a global business environment. For countless industries, operating with international business partners and clients is a customary practice. In order for these partnerships to thrive it is vital that staff members be trained in cultural differences and sensitivity. Cultural sensitivity is an understanding of distinctions and parallels across different cultures and countries. Cultural sensitivity shows a respect for other cultures. Understanding the differences between cultures assists with better communication and builds relationships. Cultural sensitivity is important because it allows staff to work effectively with those of another culture and creates respect and value for the people therein. This reduces cultural barriers between business effecting increased workflow. Businesses can encourage cultural sensitivity by training staff and offering material to prepare them for any interfaces they may encounter. “Consider differences in context sensitivity, feelings about space, group-oriented behavior and other factors” (Newman). Some companies will have organized webinars or easily accessible material regarding topics such as how hand gestures can be vastly different in meaning from that of their own or how many cultures differ in how they offer greetings. In summary, cultural sensitivity impacts current business culture as it “can accomplish more and better-quality work in less time” (Newman). Cultural sensitivity allows for better communication and relationships, creates effective workflow and reduces cultural barriers. As global business continues to grow cultural sensitivity will play an important part in its success.
