Description

Dalagang Pilipina Back in time, this term uses to describe typical Filipino women that are modest, quiet, mahinhin (lady-like), reserved and poised. But nowadays, many people are arguing that this “Dalagang Pilipina” is a dying breed. Is it really disappearing or we just evolve? If you grew with your lola or tita, you have probably heard them telling you that your skirt is too short, your lips are too red, your blouse is too see-through, or you went home too late (or early since you did come in at 2AM). What’s the reason behind this? Because before, Filipinas wear long dresses called saya, hair is tied up and they always have pamayapay in their hands. They don’t laugh out loud instead they cover their mouths with pamaymay to hide their smiles . They would always talk so minimal, and would just stay at home. As a woman, they have to learn how to do household chores such as cooking, cleaning the house, sewing, etc. If she admire someone, she have to wait to serenade her or to court (ligawan) her in the balcony of their ancestral house before they get into a relationship. These are the characteristics a Dalagang Pilipina should posses before. Nowadays, maybe this is a forgotten culture already. Teenagers are more showy and transparent. We don’t care anymore who confesses first. If we click then let’s start dating. We tend to wear short clothes as possible. We talk so loud and didn’t care about what others may think. Is this bad? In my opinion, all people in the world are developing. I don’t blame the women of today. After all, nobody is perfect. It’s not a standard that women should be following. Modesty isn’t necessarily a sign of goodness, and “acting

like a slut” isn’t evil. If a woman wants to act a certain way, let them be as long as they not harming others. We are still human beings and coping with changes isn’t bad. One thing that didn’t change for sure is, we, Filipino women are strong and independent and are gems of tomorrow....
