PROJECT 2: 12” ALBUM DESIGN PACKAGE Important Dates 5min Concept Pitch: Week 8 5min Final Presentation: Week 12 Studio Classes (Week 7-12): It is expected that students will develop and refine their designs in class. Student engagement, collaborative teamwork and participation will be reviewed by the tutor on a weekly basis. Analyse, interpret complex ideas and messages through research and experimentation to develop an innovative designed outcome for an artist, album and audience.



Apply advanced image-making techniques and conceptual knowledge to develop confident illustrative/photographic forms which articulates the artist’s vision.

Assessment Description The purpose of this assessment is to expand and apply the knowledge you have acquired in Project 1 associated with visual conceptualisation, modes of visualisation and material processes connected with music design. Following on from Project 1 you will draw from you chosen music genre (e.g. Rock) to conceive, develop and design ‘Special Edition’ gatefold 12” Album package for a specific artist and album (e.g. Pink Floyd, the Wall). The final 12” design package comprises -

Front and back gatefold 12” sleeve visual design Vinyl label designs for the record Poster insert (from Project 1)

The album design must incorporate artist and album name and track listing. How you chose to incorporate this content in the image design is open. In line with the learning objectives, the emphasis and focus of the album design rests on the image component. Precedents will be discussed in class for visual reference. There are no restrictions in terms of artist, period and album. However, the concept, image design and branding must be completely original. That is, it must not draw from any existing artwork or images associated with the artist or chosen album. Submission Requirements A. Concept Pitch (5%)

This 5min presentation outlines a concept plan that covers the choice of genre, artist and album for the special edition, mind map and mood board, rationale for proposed concept, image-making techniques and approach. It must also contain your early experiments and conceptual development. Format is A4 landscape pdf file. 10-page maximum.

B. Final Presentation (5%)

This 5min presentation that outlines the creative rationale and material choices and showcases refined designs (gatefold album artwork) for final tutor feedback and peer review. 8-page maximum. C. 12” Album Design Package (30%)

Students are expected to produce a high quality physical 12” gatefold album mock up and a digital version of their gatefold album design package for submission. The digital submission comprises a high-quality pdf of the gatefold album artwork. Students must also include a 500-word creative rationale as part of this digital submission. The inDesign template will be made available with instructions for use in class and on the BB site prior to submission. Blank 12” gatefold sleeves and clear plastic covers will be provided for the hardcopy mock up submission. Students will be required to print out their designs in high resolution, cut, trim and adhere to the mock up in a professional manner. The high quality physical mock up includes -
