Decade Review Comparison Chart Grading Rubric Part I: Decade #1: 1930’s Decade #2: 1980’s

1. Who were significant registered nurses during this decade and what made them famous? Must name two for each decade

Mary Breckinridge (1881-1965), worked to provide healthcare to the poorest parts of Kentucky. Eventually, she started the American Association of Nurse-Midwives, and the first American school of midwifery in New York in 1932 (Castlenovo, 2020). Lystra Eggert Gretter (1858-1951), is most famously known for her alteration of the Florence Nightingale oath in 1935 to state that a nurse would become a “missioner of health” dedicated to the advancement of human welfare (Miller, 2021).

June Jolly (1928-2016) was a pediatrist nurse and social worker who worked to pioneer the transformation the social and emotional care of children in the hospital setting. In 1980, she published her book The Other Side of Pediatrics: a guide to the everyday care of sick children. (Contributor, 2019). Nelly Garzon Alarcon (19322019) was elected as the first South American President of the International Council of Nurses (ICN) and she served until 1989. In 1988, The World Health Organization (WHO) awarded her the Health for All Medal for her efforts and contributions within ICN to achieve the WHO primary health goals (OCEinfo, 2019).

2. What were the common health issues/trends of each decade?

In the 1930’s, cardiovascular and renal diseases, cancer, influenza and pneumonia, tuberculosis were the main health issues and causes of death. The great depression began in 1929, and suicide mortality increased during 19301933 but accounted for less than 2% of deaths between during this time (Swanbrow, 2009).

The first reported case of AIDS was in 1981, and the epidemic was still on the high rise in 1989. The second outbreak of the measles lasted from 1981-1991. In 1982, an unidentified person murdered seven people in the Chicago area by filling Tylenol gel caps with cyanide and placing the product boxes back on store shelves. Alzheimer's

3. What new discoveries impacted health care and/or what big changes were occurring during these decades?

In the early 1930s, The Great Depression was in full effect and many Americans were unable to afford health care. Insurance policies for health care coverage were practically non-existent. The organization, Hospital Services Association, began in 1933 with a small network of just seven hospitals in St. Paul, Minnesota. We now know this association as Blue Closs Blue Shield (Butzer, 2019).

4. How were nursing students educated and trained to practice as a registered nurse during your decade? (Two-part question).

During the great depression, the concept of educating nurses as healthcare professionals had just begun to catch on. Nursing schools with high-quality programs were becoming established. Professional nurses (BSN) were to be educated in four-year college programs, and practical nurses (ADN) were to be educated in twelve-month programs based either in hospitals or other educational facilities (2018). In 1934, a report titled An Activity Analysis of Nursing and Nursing Schools—Today and Tomorrow, published specified lists for nursing practice, including a list of patient conditions encountered by nurses in a variety of health care settings, a

disease, anorexia nervosa, and bulimia were psychological issues brought to light in the 80’s as well (Cengage, 2019). In 1981, the FDA approved a costeffective vaccine to protect children who were at risk for developing hepatitis B (Spencer, 2021). Many more healthcare advances came to light in this decade, such as the cochlear implant in 1980, the pulse oximeter in 1981, and the safety needle in 1988 just to name a few (Industry, 2017).

There was a serious movement of nursing students into universities from vocational education centers in1980’s. Even as the ADN remains the most common degree held by working RNs, the National League in Nursing (NLN) releases the first position statement to affirm the BSN is most desirable as the minimum educational level for entrylevel nurses. Over the next three decades, many other organizations adopt the same position (Passmore, 2020). During this time, there was also some indication that the nursing curriculum was not patient-centered and that the training paradigm did not encourage personal development in

In previous years, most nurses were expected to work at least 12 hours a day, 6-7 days per week. Things changed in this decade- hours were cut back to eight hours a day, with no more than 48 hours in a week. Some nurses worked in some hospitals around the US in the 1930s for room and board and maybe $15 a month (Nursing, 2019).

critical thinking, self-reliance and problem solving (P., 1992). In 1980, there was a total estimated population of 1.86 million graduates from programs preparing for RN licensure. By the end of the decade, there was a dramatic increased labor force participation of RNs and a sharp rise in the number of graduates of RN programs (Scheckel).

5. For this decade, what was the role of the nurse? (Do not list duties or tasks)

In the 1930’s, nurses were not only caregivers but also educators. During the Great Depression, teaching family members how to care for sick loved ones, and giving instructions on the prevention of illness was all part of the nurse’s day to day (KVNA). During wartime, lots of nurses became visiting/private duty nurses which required lots of different roles. Being in patient homes, they had to adapt to being counselors and collaborators within the family, too.

In the 1980’s the idea of the nurse being much more than “just” a caregiver was reinforced. The nurses in the 1980’s really had to step into the advocate and leader roles as Nursing practice advanced so much- nurses were more involved in the actual decision-making process for the patients who come through as opposed to just following orders (Contributor, 2017).

6. What nursing specialties existed during this decade (i.e. oncology, intensive care). (Every decade had a nursing specialty)

Nurses were in high demand during WWII and military nursing became a widely sought out specialty. Additionally, the great depression caused for lots of private duty nurses to become

With the implementation of DRG systems, hospitals were forced to increase efficiency. This led to the creation of the case management specialty, as well as the outpatient
