Hello Everyone, My chosen artifact for discussion is The Great Pyramid at Giza Cairo, Egypt. The Great Pyramid of Giza is a defining symbol of Egypt and is one of the ancient Seven Wonders of the World. It is located on the Giza plateau near the modern city of Cairo and was built over a twenty-year period during the reign of the king Khufu (2589-2566 BCE, also known as Cheops) of the 4th Dynasty. It is the largest of the 3 pyramids in Egypt and was built as a tomb for the Egyptian Pharaoh Khufu. I think the universal idea of the Great Pyramid of Giza is that it is a sepulcher for the Egyptian pharaohs. A place where their remains can be buried as a sign of honor. What I inferred from studying the artifact in terms of the culture and context in which it was created is that is a display of wealth, control of the Pharaohs, and the cultural belief of the Egyptians as regards life after death. Because of their sepulchral purpose and their survival over a span of many millennia, the pyramids at Giza, especially the Great Pyramid of Khufu, remain an impressive sight. They represent both the dominant religious concept and the enduring architectural achievements of the ancient Egyptians. I think the creator’s intention for creating this artifact is to have a comfortable place to be buried. The Egyptian Pharoah’s expected to become gods in the afterlife and to prepare for the next world, they erected temples to the gods and massive pyramid tombs for themselves and filled them with all the things each ruler would need to guide and sustain himself in the next world.
