Description

DONNING AND REMOVING STERILE GLOVES (OPEN METHOD) Definition: Sterile gloves are gloves that are free from all microorganisms. Sterile glove technique is necessary in a way to protect us from harmful microorganisms and infectious diseases. Donning is the act of putting on sterile gloves. Meanwhile, removing is the act of taking off sterile gloves after use. Objectives: 1. To avoid cross contamination between the client and the nurse 2. To reduce the risk of transmission of infectious diseases 3. To protect the wearer from any harm caused by dangerous chemicals and to freely touch any sterile objects without contaminating them. Safety/Security Measures: 1. Proper hand hygiene 2. Prepare a clean work area 3. Ensure that the gloves are sterile and unused Pre-procedural Preparations: 1. Wash hands 2. Gather the necessary equipment. Ensure Sterility of gloves. 3. Provide Privacy Equipment: Sterile gloves, Waste receptacle

STEPS 1. Check that the sterile glove package is dry and unopened. Also, note expiration date, making sure that the date is still valid.[1] Rationale: Sterile gloves might already been opened and contaminated. Checking if expiration date is still valid ensures sterility of the gloves.

2. Place sterile glove package on clean, flat and dry surface at or above your waist. [1][2][3]

Rationale: Moisture may contaminate the sterile gloves. Any sterile items/package should be kept above waist level.

3. Open the outside wrapper by carefully peeling the top layer back. Remove inner package, handling only the outside of it. [1] Rationale: This will maintain the sterility of the gloves.

4. Place the inner package on the work surface with the side labelled “cuff end” closest to the body. [1]

Rationale: This allows for easier glove application

5. Carefully open the inner package. Fold opens the top flap, then the bottom and sides. Be careful not to touch the inner surface of the package or the gloves. [1] Rationale: To ensure that the inner package and the gloves remains sterile.

6. Identify right and left glove. Each glove has cuff approximately 5 cm (2 inches) wide. Glove dominant hand first.[2] Rationale: Proper identification of gloves prevents contamination by improper fit. Gloving dominant hand first improves dexterity. 7. With the thumb and forefinger of the non- dominant hand, grasp edge cuff of the glove for dominant hand, touching only the exposed inside surface of the glove. [1][2] Rationale: Making sure that the unsterile hands touches only the inside of the gloves keeping the outside sterile.

8. Keeping the hands above the waistline, lift and hold the glove up and off the innerpackage with fingers down. Be careful it does not touch any unsterile object.[1][2] Rationale: To avoid contamination.

9. Carefully insert dominant hand palm up into glove and pull glove on. Leave the cuff folded until the opposite hand is gloved. [1] Rationale: Inserting upward with unsterile hands may contaminate the gloves. 10. Hold the thumb of the gloved hand outward. Place the fingers of the gloved hand inside the folded cuff of the other glove. Lift it from the wrapper, taking care not to touch anything and observe sterile technique. [1][3] Rationale: Less risk of contamination if thumb is held outward.

11. Carefully insert non-dominant hand into glove. Pull glove on and do not allow fingers and thumb of gloved dominant hand to touch any part of exposed non-dominant hand. [1][2][3] Rationale: Sterile surfaces touching non-sterile ones may cause contamination. 12. Slide the fingers of one hand under the cuff of the other and fully extend the cuff down the arm, touching only the sterile outside of the glove. Repeat for the remaining hand. [1] Rationale: To avoid contaminating the inside of the gloves

13. Adjust gloves on both hands if necessary. Interlock fingers of gloved hands and hold away from body above waist level until beginning procedure [1][2] Rationale: To ensure proper fit of gloves and to prevent touching nonsterile objects. Hold the removed glove in the [1][2][3] remaining gloved hand. Rationale: To prevent contaminating the hand when removing glove. 15. Slide fingers of ungloved hand between the remaining glove and the wrist. Take care to avoid touching the outside surface of the glove. Remove it by pulling it off, inverting it as it is pulled, keeping the contaminated area on the inside, and securing the first glove inside the second. [1][2][3] Rationale: To ensure that contaminated areas of the gloves does not come into contact with the hands or wrists. 16. Discard gloves in appropriate waste container.
