Description

Chapter 1 Reading Questions: 3. What are the five major trends in immigration discussed in this chapter? A: The five major trends in immigration include Key to productivity, dispersal to nontraditional receiving communities, ongoing language acquisition challenges, changing home and family dynamics, and lastly, children of unauthorized immigrants as a substantial percentage of K-12. Key to productivity is the growth that is expected from the immigrants for the United States. This is the group of individuals that are to take over for the generation that is retiring and fill the gap. Dispersal to nontraditional receiving communities is the growth of immigrants to states that are not typically known for diversity. Ongoing language acquisition challenges is based upon the challenges of the English language for these immigrants and how general educational teachers will be called upon to teach these English Learners. Changing home and family dynamics is based upon the declined percentage of students who are immigrants, but the number of children seeking shelter has increased. Lastly, children of unauthorized immigrants as a substantial percentage of K-12 students is based upon how illegal parental citizens fear deportation so they do not apply for benefits for their children, who are legal citizens. 4. What is a nontraditional receiving community? What should teachers know about such communities in relation to classroom diversity and assessment? A: A nontraditional receiving community is the diffusion of immigrant families in states not typically associated with high levels of student diversity (Herrera, Chapter 1, pg. 7). Teachers should know that this increase in population has created a declination in Central states. They should also know that with the increase in immigrant families, there is a necessity for additional team members such as bilingual teachers, paraprofessionals, ESL teachers, various instruments and programs that are needed to support these families. Assessments will also need to be adjusted or the students will need to be accommodated for things such as their time limit, allowing the students to use dictionaries/ thesaurus, or alternative assistive technology....
