Description of Procedure Directly visualizes mucosal lining of esophagus, stomach, and duodenum with flexible endoscope.
Indications - To diagnosis upper GI tract disease/disorders
Interpretation of Findings - inflammation - ulcerations - tumors - varices - Mallory-Weiss tears
Potential Complications - aspiration - airway obstruction - allergic reaction to the contrast medium - infection - duodenal hematoma - bowel perforation

CONSIDERATIONS
Nursing Interventions (pre, intra, post) - Before: keep patient NPO for 8 hours. Make sure signed consent is on chart. Give preop meds if ordered. - After: keep patient NPO until gag reflux has returned. Gently tickle back of throat to determine gag reflux. Use warm saline gargle to relieve sore throat. Check temp. q15-30 min for 1-2 hours (sudden temp. spike is a sign of perforation)
Client Education - Explain to patient that local anesthesia may be sprayed on throat before insertion of scope and that patient will be sedated during procedure
Nursing Interventions - Raise head of bed - tell patient to hold their head down - monitor VS - monitor for perforation - monitor AIRWAY...
