EMM 513: JIG, TOOL AND FIXTURE DESIGN Pre requisite: EMM 410 Manufacturing Processes II Expected Outcome At the end of this course, the student should be able to 1. State and explain the principle of location 2. Design locating and clamping devices for operations such as cutting, drilling, welding and assembly 3. Design fixtures for inspection 4. Design jigs for common operations such as drilling and welding. Course content

Jig and fixtures; economic approach to the provision of special equipment, design consideration, cost of production, materials for jigs and fixtures. Planning, locating and locating devices. Machines of clamping, indexing devices; Different types of drill jig and fixtures, jigs and fixtures for single and multi boring heads, milling jigs and fixtures; thread milling, profiling, grinding fixtures; mandrels chucks, fixtures for producing radii. Turning and broaching fixtures, gear cutting fixtures; inspection fixtures, assembly fixtures, form tools. Limit gauges, press tools. Jig and fixtures office; drafting operation sheets. Teaching Organization Lectures: 2 hours per week; Tutorials: 2 hours per week; Laboratory Exercises: Three sessions per semester each being 3 hours long.

Assessment Ordinary Examination at end of Semester: 70 % Continuous Assessment: 30 % where 20 % shall be continuous assessment tests and 5 % shall be assignments. Each laboratory session shall be marked out of 15 marks and the aggregated under the laboratory unit for the semester in which this course is offered.
