Generic Name: Activated charcoal Trade Name Actidose-Aqua Indications ● Poisoning Contraindications ● SDAC is contraindicated in patients with unprotected airways and decreased levels of consciousness who are not intubated ● Charcoal is not indicated in patients who have ingested acids or alkalis (corrosives) because it has not shown any benefit in these cases. Side Effects ● Side effects of activated charcoal include constipation and black stools. ● More serious, but rare, side effects are a slowing or blockage of the intestinal tract, regurgitation into the lungs, and dehydration. ● Dosage: Adult 25g; Child 12.5-25 g (1g per kg)
