Description

End of First Semester Reflection At the beginning of my first semester in the athletic training program, I was nervous about what to expect clinically, especially since there was a late change in preceptors for my clinical site. Despite this, I was still excited to see what the semester would bring and what challenges I may face in the classroom and on site. Initially, there was a lot of anatomy and other topics involving treatments and strengthening techniques that I had no prior knowledge about, so I felt that this made the beginning of the semester slightly more difficult. As classes progressed and as I was introduced to more material, I gained confidence in the classroom and at my clinical site. My feelings of doubt were also eased by both my preceptor and upperclassman student because they welcomed my questions and helped me learn daily. I have come a long way since the beginning of the semester. I feel much more confident when I walk into the training room compared to twelve weeks ago. I am thankful that my first rotation was such a valuable learning experience, and I hope to use the experience as I move forward with my education and career. Over the course of the semester, I was able to adjust to the intense schedule. This was one of the more difficult things to do, and I learned how to manage my time and find a balance between my class schedule and clinical experience hours. I went to my clinical site everyday ready to learn, yet willing to be wrong. I learned a lot in my rotation about evaluation techniques, emergency care, long-term conditions, and about the profession. For the most part, I enjoyed my first semester as an athletic training student. The Athletic Training Program opened up a lot of opportunities for me. I give my preceptor a lot of credit for this because he encouraged us to attend as many appointments as possible and to volunteer with other sports. I met several doctors throughout the semester, and I had the chance to observe them and compare their techniques and specialties. Some of the best opportunities I had included observing a surgery, a stress echocardiogram, and forming connections with the athletes, coaches, and preceptor. Even though I am not completing the program, I am grateful for all of the learning experiences I had this semester, especially at my clinical site....
