Title: Desiree’s Baby

A1 The Realism period is a movement that took place between the mid-19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The realism period is defined by a lot of good historical events. There are a few significant events that happened during the realism period. These are the movement of rapid industrialization, urbanization, and the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Realism was more focused on idealism compared to the Neoclassical period. During Realism period, artists, philosophers, and authors were focused on reflecting about the nature of humanity, environment, and economic circumstances. Philosophers changed the way they thought because of industrialization. During this period, authors were able to write more literature because of the increasing source of subjects and they commonly write about the struggles of industrialization and urbanization. Artists were mostly presenting about the everyday life of the people in this period. These social, economic, and environmental issues made the works of artists look good. A2. Kate Chopin wrote Desiree’s Baby in November 24, 1893. Desiree wanted to end her life and her kid’s life when she found out that they were part of African American heritage which is wrong. The author is foreshadowing on what is happening during the realism period. It is a very short story that classifies the struggles on racism, sexism, slavery, and equality during the realism period.

A3. Kate Chopin is an American novelist and short-story writer based in Louisiana. She was known for her short stories that explored feminist themes including. She wrote “The Story of an Hour”, “Desiree’s Baby”, and “The Storm”. Kate Chopin talked about how women are being treated and viewed during the realism. She believed that women could not reach their full potential during realism because of not having the same freedom and rights that men had. During her time, she was one of the feminists who fought for equality of both genders.
