Gamblin 1 Amanda Gamblin Weiss English 101-02 December 3, 2019 Expanding Hunting Limits The hunting laws, like season times and bag limits, should be increased. There are many positive and beneficial reasons why the laws should be increased. Many oppositions makes a logical deduction and have good reason why they oppose. Understanding the pros and cons are very important. After researching there are very good arguments saying that the increase of bag limits and longer seasons can support the expansion of hunting laws. There are many benefits to increasing seasons and bag limits such as managing wildlife population, families saving money on protecting their crops or livestock, and more recreational activity time for people. State game departments use hunters to control wildlife populations (Miniter). Still estimating 1.5 million car-deer collisions a year, raising the bag limit and expanding hunting seasons can help lower this number for public safety. On average, 200 people are killed in these accidents yearly and deer hunters can help save many lives by managing our wildlife population (Miniter). The months that are crucial for expanding the hunting season is between September and January when deer are breeding (Merrill). During the mating season, many deer are more likely to be on the move and this can potently cause many fatal accidents. With dangerous species, it’s important to have extended hunting seasons to help downgrade populations. Many ranchers and farmers complain about their livestock being killed

Gamblin 2 or injured due to wolves or coyotes (“Montana Extends”). With having a large population not managed by hunters, it puts ranchers in a hard situation to provide for their families. Some farmers will have what is called “game plots” to help feed wildlife that they will hunt (Miniter). With dangerous wildlife destroying crops and killing livestock, Montana is one of the states that feel it is necessary to give hunters more allotted time (“Montana Extends”). Supporters of this argument can easily argue why there should be extended hunting laws, such as increasing seasons for a longer period of time. Hunters only get a few designated weeks a year to hunt and the main good reason for hunting is helping maintain a well-balanced ecosystem. "Hunting and fishing are more than just traditional pastimes as they are also vital to the conservation of our lands and waters, our outdoor recreation economy, and our American way of life" (Wallace). An article regarding a fed proposal explains a new proposal that would expand hunting at national wildlife refuges. It will expand access and opportunities for hunting which is vital to the conservation of our lands and expand our outdoor recreational economy (Wallace). The expansion on land alone and overturn of baiting laws can help families financially to have food and safely keep population of animals at a certain number. Recreational time for families can help bring families together, help educate the young generation the importance of gun safety, and proper ways to kill an animal without suffering. It’s a way of keeping old traditions alive since the beginning of mankind. Studies show that more recreational time for the young generation can help with gun violence, since it is mandated through the state for every hunter go through the safety course to be able to go hunt. Expanding the seasons for more recreational time will not just help manage the ecosystem, but it will keep our young generation occupied with activity and more knowledge that is more beneficial than stuck to a television screen indoors.

Gamblin 3 It is clear not everyone may be passionate about hunting and keeping the traditional way of life alive. Opposing sides feel its cruel and animals experience pain and suffering, thinking its inhumane to kill for fun. Other concerns are thinking it contributes to species extinction and that there is no control over the ecosystem. One article suggest that, “hunting is a violent and cowardly form of outdoor "entertainment" that kills hundreds of millions of animals every year, many of whom are wounded and die a slow and painful death” (Berlatsky). Hunters help prevent these animals from dying a painful death caused by predators or diseases. The opposition makes an logical argument, they are not considering the big picture or reason behind the benefits of having extended hunting seasons and bag limits. The opposition feels that animals experience pain and suffering, thinking it may be for “fun”, but many hunters honor that animal by killing it properly and use those resources to feed their family. In hunters education classes that are provided by the each state and is a requirement before hunting legally, each hunter is taught how to properly kill animals to prevent an animal from suffering slowly. They are educated on gun safety and the proper ways to hold and operate a fire arm while they are hunting around the public (Wallace). Opposing sides can also say trapping is causing animals to go extinct, but trapping ties into protecting wildlife from dangerous species, protects farmers land, and with increased bag limits on these animals it can protect other species in the ecosystem. In conclusion, there are many facts to take into consideration when dealing with the debate of extended hunting seasons and the bag limits for hunters. The opposing side shows an excellent argument against the extended hunting season and limits, but are closed minded to the way it can benefit many citizens across the United States. There will need to be regulations and rules that come with giving more freedom to hunters, mainly so they will not abuse what they are given. The management of wildlife population, families saving money on protecting crops or livestock, and more

Gamblin 4 recreational activity time for people can create a change in our society today. Extending hunting seasons and raising bag limits is the right direction this generation needs to turn to.
