Experiment 11: (ENT) Enthalpy of Neutralization Purpose The aim of this experiment is to investigate the enthalpy change of both a strong acid/strong base reaction and a weak acid/strong base reaction using principles of calorimetry. Introduction The spontaneity of a reaction in thermodynamics refers to whether or not the reaction occurs with or without external intervention. A spontaneous reaction will occur without an external force whereas a nonspontaneous reaction will not. The spontaneity of a reaction can be predicted at constant pressure by the change in Gibbs Free Energy ( ∆ G ). The following equation represents the relationship between ∆ G , enthalpy change ( ∆ H ), temperature (T) and change in entropy ( ∆ S ¿ . ∆ G =∆ H −T ∆ S When ∆ G=0, the reaction is at equilibrium.
