Can this be used effectively to save lives? 8. Description: The earthquake of Tohoku in 2011 was devastating, one of the largest recorded in history. It was not only the earthquake itself that was catastrophic, in fact most of the deaths resulted from the massive tsunami following the earthquake. Scientists used information from this event to help prepare mitigation methods for the future. When the ground shakes, waves reach the ionosphere and subsequently GPS satellites can note it. A similar method applies to tsunamis, where disturbance in the ionosphere can be detected and pinpoint the tsunami. What is being attempted is to continue to test out this method in hopes of perfecting it, and then it can be applied usefully to warn those in areas affected of immediate danger, particularly those living along the coast. The concern can immediate warnings prevent significant consequences? 9. F, Earthquake originating above a subducting plate 10. B, One or more family members experienced it 11.
