1. a. Line can be used to communicate emotion and state of mind through its character and direction. Describe what kind of meanings might be attributed to each of the following types of line. i. Horizontal ii. Vertical iii. Diagonal iv. Horizontal and vertical combined v. Curves (10 marks) b. Using your knowledge of the expressive qualities of line, interpret the personalities of the group shown in Saul Steinberg’s “Cut-out Family” reproduced in Fig. 1 below.

2. a. Philippe Stark’s iconic Juicy Salif lemon squeezer is shown in Fig. 3 below. Discuss what you consider to be the strengths and weaknesses of this design, both in the aesthetic and the purely functional contexts.

Your design should possess a distinctive style and appearance that will ensure its status as a future ‘design classic’ yet also address the functional shortcomings of the Juicy Salif . Your solution should include a series of concept sketches showing your train of thought and the evolution of the design together with a drawing (or drawings) that clearly shows your finished design to its best advantage. 3. a. Discuss the relevance of aesthetics in the engineering environment. (10 marks)

b. Explain what design concept sketches are and discuss why they are such an essential part of the design process. (10 marks)

c. In the context of art and design, using examples as appropriate, explain the difference between visual unity and unity of concept. (5 marks)

4. a. Explain the concept behind the Jay Doplin’s method for generating perspective in drawings. Use diagrams as appropriate. (5 marks)

b. In the late nineteenth century, Chicago architect Louis Sullivan wrote, "Form follows function." What did he mean? Give two examples that prove this idiom, and two examples that don’t. (5 marks) c. Detach Fig. 4, on page 5, and complete the outline picture of a room using the appropriate linear perspective techniques, adding the following items:  A desk  A computer monitor on the desk  A table lamp on the desk  A chair  A window  A rectangular mat on the floor  A picture hanging on a wall  A door (in the doorway shown) It is important that you leave all construction lines visible, do not erase them.
