This question relates to the Oral Health therapist’s role in the management of patients with medical conditions. a) List five examples of special medical needs common in our elderly patients that are significant to dental treatment.

b) List and briefly discuss the steps that could be taken by the Oral Health Therapist to minimise stress-induced medical emergencies?

c) Describe the actions you would take if your patient experienced chest pains whilst lying in the supine position in the dental chair.

A 14 year old male has fallen off his bike and has injuries to his lip and knee. His lip has a deep cut almost through the body of the lip, the result of his upper incisor piercing the skin. He is missing a large piece of skin from his knee. This wound is deep and wide, imbedded with dirt and small rocks. With your knowledge of wound healing compare the two injuries. a) Explain which injury could be described as healing by primary intention and which could be described as healing by secondary intention.

b) List and discuss the factors which affect wound healing in the head and on the knee. (8 marks) c) Which wound is more likely to heal with a scarring? Explain your answer. (1 mark)

b) How do you distinguish between an initial caries lesion and enamel fluorosis? (1 mark) c) Describe the changes which take place in the structure and composition of surface enamel which contribute to this appearance.

d) As the initial lesion progresses describe what happens to the enamel surface. (1 mark) e) Once bacteria reach the Dentino Enamel Junction (DEJ), what happens to the shape of the progressing caries lesion? f)

As the caries lesion progresses into dentine describe the changes in structure and composition, as well as the reactive changes which may occur.
