History 1301 March 9th, 2020.

PART 1 The westward expansion was the movement of Europeans to the west after Thomas Jefferson purchased the territory of Louisiana from the French government in 1803. This was because more Europeans kept coming to American so, there was no more land available in the east. there was a need for expansion, hence, they relocated further to the west because more lands were available. The Europeans saw land as an asset and also a source of wealth. They brought with them their religion and way of life, they also saw their movement as a way to have more freedom from their political system, religion, and law. Part 2

In the early 1800s, women were considered inferior and viewed as less important than men. Some people spoke and advocated for women's rights. “In 1972 Mary Wollstonecraft…. Asserted that “the rights of humanity” should not be “confined to the male line” (297). She published several articles emphasizing that women should be able to get an education and be employed. Robert Owen broke the stereotype that women should not speak in public, she didn’t care about the criticism she would receive from speaking in public. She spoke on "subjects ranging from communication to slavery to women's rights "(297). Maria Stewart who also broke the stereotype of lecturing in public wrote: "this is the land of freedom … and we claim our rights," including

2 the right to speak in public" (466). Women were considered inferior to a man and couldn't do something a man could do such as earning her wage for herself, owning properties and signing legal documents. Angelina Grimke states that “whatever is morally right for a man to do, it is morally right for a woman to do “(466). Stanton also advocated for women’s right to vote because women were not allowed to vote. He states that “only the vote will make a woman as free as a man is free” (466). These individuals mentioned are some of the people who participated in the women's rights movement then.

Part 3 Slavery was the major factor that leads to civil war. The native Americans were used as slaves after their lands were stolen. That slavery of the natives was abolished, Africans were kidnapped brought to America and enslaved. In the north there Was western expansion which brought about a better economy. The people there saw no need for slaves, they wanted freedom for everyone. So, they freed their slaves and started the abolishment movement. Southerners, on the other hand, were benefiting from slavery because they were mainly into farming and the slaves would work in their farm or plantation for free. The slave owners made money from selling their produce from there and selling their slaves, but they soon developed an inferiority complex because of the industrialization in the north. The northern population was expanding, creating more states because it attracted more people to relocate there since plenty of jobs were available. Some people would work for less or cheap wages, so slaves who work for free would make it impossible for those people to find jobs. Therefore, the slaves were not needed. All these developments helped the north grow and made their economy better. The north had more states than the south. So, the southerners feared the northern

3 expansion would make them succumb to the idea the northerners had about slavery. In 1860 Abraham Lincoln who was in s support of the abolishment movement won the presidential election and was made the president. That made the southerner’s scared and decided that they were to divide the country in two by forming their own country. The president refused and strategically made the south attack the north, then he sent troops to the south to stop them from forming a country; that led to the beginning of the civil war in 1861....
