ABSTRACT This study identified the different perspectives and perceptions of student entrepreneurs on Mathematics being the game-changer in taking the Accountancy, Business, and Management strand. The challenges and coping practices of student entrepreneurs were also highlighted in this study. This research was conducted to identify and to analyze the beliefs and behavior of Senior High School students in José Rizal University regarding being excellent in Math as essential in taking the said strand. Through qualitative inquiry, this study seeks to answer our questions by gathering information on the lived experiences of five senior high student entrepreneurs from the Senior high school of Josè Rizal University. Through this study, we found out that most of the students don’t believe that one needs to be good in Math to manage and keep up with the challenge of the ABM strand. We also learned that student entrepreneurs have different strategies on how to cope with their admittedly lacking skill in Mathematics. However, student entrepreneurs, despite their positivity, are still being challenged with the difficulties that comes with understanding lessons in the said subject. Nevertheless, student entrepreneurs cope up with these challenges by making it as their motivation to further improve their skills and by responding positively to the criticisms and hardships that they encounter.

CHAPTER I PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction Mathematics plays a vital role in our everyday life. Aside from being taught in our respective schools, basic mathematics plays a key role in professions like company directors, business consultants, and airline pilots. There are also professions which require a rather advanced and detailed knowledge in Math. In relation to the Accountancy, Business, and Management strand, Business Mathematics is used in learning how to manage various business operations. With many aspiring students who strive to become successful businessmen, managers, and accountants, they tend to take this strand which may guide them towards their desired goals. Although Business Math is slightly less difficult than other mathematics courses, still, many students fail in their examinations. What are the reasons for such results? Candidates are reported to exhibit poor understanding of mathematical concepts and are unable to form the appropriate mathematical models which could be tackled with the requisite skills (Chief Examiner's Report, 2007). Several educational researchers have put their time on trying to discover the possible reasons why ABM students, which, according to belief, are supposed to be good in Math, perform badly in Mathematics. Also, it has been discovered that these students have developed a negative attitude towards this subject which rooted from past failures in the said subject. Is a good understanding in Math really a requirement to become an ABM student?

Significance of the Study The importance of this study is to make students think that in choosing a strand especially ABM does not have to be good in Math or it is a requirement for you to be in this kind of strand. The goal of this project is to make students think that in choosing ABM they do not have to be afraid of Mathematics instead, they should study this subject because in ABM there is always Math involved but you do not have to be good at it.

Statement of the Problem Most of the students have a difficulty when it comes to Mathematics, but some students have a specific subject which they excel in. The researchers aimed to have a deeper study on whether excelling in Math is a 6

requirement in taking the ABM strand and also to answer the following questions: 1. How do aspiring ABM students feel about the said requirement? 2. What do students who perform poorly in Math think about taking the said strand? 3. Will the students still continue with the ABM strand despite not being excellent in Math?

Scope and Limitations This study is to be conducted to determine if excellence in Math is a prerequisite in taking the ABM Strand. This research will focus on the Grade 11 ABM students of Jose Rizal University, the school year 2018-2019 (JRU). This study will not cover other subjects. Other students aside from those in Grade 11 who are in the ABM strand are not considered as respondents of the research. The researchers will begin the research study by conducting an interview. The duration of this study should last within 2-3 months or before the end of the 1st semester.

Conceptual Framework The major concept of this study is focused on the impact of excellence in Math in taking up ABM as a Senior High strand. This model examined the relationship between independent and COGNITION: dependent ABM strand factors. -RESEARCHING -GATHERING OF DATA

FIGURE 1 FIGURE 1: The figure shows above the contents of the dependent variable which is excellence in Math. While in the cognition or process include researching, gathering of data and interview. And the independent variable is ABM strand. This research paper measures and analyzes on how excellence in Math can be a factor in choosing ABM as a Senior High strand. By examining these selected factors, it also reveals the limitation of this conceptual model.

Definition of Terms Mathematics deals with logical reasoning and quantitative calculation, and its development has involved an increasing degree of idealization and abstraction of its subject matter. Excellence is the quality of being outstanding or extremely good. Prerequisite is a thing that is required as a prior condition for something else to happen or exist. Accountancy, Business, and Management strand focuses on the basic concepts of financial management, business management, corporate operations, and all things that are accounted for.

CHAPTER II METHODOLOGY This chapter contains the methodology of research study, the supervision of interviewers, and data analysis techniques, including the study design, collection of data, sampling frame and procedure of respondent’s selection. In this chapter, study methodologies have been used to diagnose and examine the way a bully thinks on 20 randomly selected Grade 10 students in Sta. Lucia High School.

Research Design The method used in gathering the needed information for this study is the qualitative research method. This method enabled the researchers to interpret the theoretical meaning of the findings and hypothesis development for further studies. Specifically, the researchers utilized a questionnaire of descriptive research method which enabled the researchers to gather information from the respondents without the respondents having any difficulties in answering the questions required for the researchers to have information regarding the research about the essentiality of being good in Math to take the ABM strand.

Sampling Technique The researchers applied the quota sampling. It is a type of sampling where we decide while designing the study how many people with which characteristics to include as participants. We chose the respondents based on characteristics like grade, strand, and school to find people who meet the criteria for our research.

Data Gathering Procedure For the purposes of this research, interviews were used. Its aim is to identify participant’s emotions, feelings, and opinions regarding a particular research subject. The main advantage of personal interviews is that they involve personal and direct contact between interviewers and interviewees, as well as eliminate non-response rates, but interviewers need to have developed the necessary skills to successfully carry an interview (Fisher, 2005, Wilson, 2003). As far as data collection tools were concerned, the conduction of the research involved the use of semi-structured questionnaire, which was used as an interview guide for the researcher. Some certain questions were 9

prepared, so as for the researcher to guide the interview towards the satisfaction of research objectives. Some sample questions that were included in the semi-structured questionnaire were the following: 1. Do you want to pursue ABM in college? 2. Why do you want to be an ABM student? 3. Do you consider yourself as someone who is good in Math? 4. In your opinion, does one need to be good in Math in order to take the ABM strand? Why do you think so? 5. If someone wants to take ABM but is not confident with their skill in Math, what do you think should they do? Data Analysis The data that was collected through our interview were evaluated by the researchers. The respondents shared their insights and perception regarding the vital role of being good in Math to take the ABM strand. Generally, according to the participants, it is averagely important. Although you need to be good in Math to deal with numbers, critical thinking is also a big factor. Although you may not be that good in Math, you just need to believe in yourself and practice solving different Math problems related to ABM to be able to adapt slowly. There is no direct answer whether excellence in Math is needed, it depends on how one will deal with the problem or use other skills to overcome the lack of understanding in the subject.

CHAPTER III DATA ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION

1. For question no. 1, 'Do you want to pursue ABM in college?', 5 out of 5 respondents answered ‘yes’.

2. For question no. 2, ‘Why do you want to be an ABM student?’, 2 out of 5 respondents answered that it’s because they want to be a Certified Public Accountant. 1 out of 5 respondents answered that it’s because ABM fits her more. 1 respondent said that ABM strand has more opportunities. While 1 respondent answered that it is great to have your own company someday.

11

3. For question no. 3, ‘Do you consider yourself as someone who is good in Math?’, 3 out 5 respondents answered ‘no’. 1 respondent answered ‘of course’. While 1 respondent answered ‘sometimes’.

4. For question no. 4, ‘In your opinion, does one need to be good in Math in order to take the ABM strand? Why do you think so?’, out of 5 students, 3 of them answered that you don't need to be good in Math just to take the ABM Strand. Some of them, states that they are not really good in Math but still they take ABM as their strand, for them, it's about analyzing and how to manage a business. You can still be successful in taking this stand even if you don't excel in Math. While the 2 remaining respondents said that this is really crucial in taking ABM Strand because it still focuses on numbers like in accounting you still need to compute. And for them, Math is really a part of the ABM strand so you need to be good at it.

12

5. For question no. 5, ‘If someone wants to take ABM but is not confident with their skill in Math, what do you think should they do?’, 3 out of 5 respondents stated that they should believe in their selves that they can do it. 1 respondent answered that they should work harder and study more. While the remaining one answered that they should practice, because practice makes perfect.

13

Chapter IV CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Conclusion After gathering and interpreting the essential data, we concluded the relationship of excellence in math and the will of students to the ABM Strand. Based on the findings, current ABM students still want to pursue the said strand in college. Only 40% of our respondents considered excellence in Math as a necessity. Instead being good in Math, they consider other skills like critical thinking and logical thinking as important factors in surviving the ABM Strand. Our respondents encouraged those who are not confident with their skills in math to study hard and believe in themselves. Recommendation This study successfully discovered and stated the different insights of our chosen respondents regarding our research topic. The study regarding the ABM Strand and its students should gain more attention and be explored further. Therefore, we encourage the further study of the beliefs of different people regarding the different aspects of ABM. We also recommend to conduct more interview and surveys so as to go deep into the topic and acquire accurate and in-depth information. We courage future researcher to not only focus inside school premises but also in different human environments. In accordance to the result of our study, it is imperative for schools to not only emphasize Math as the main factor of ABM but also focus on improving learners' lifelong skills.
