With the ever-growing advancement in technology and globalization there can be various ways in which a business can be carried out. It is vital for an organization to move forward and cope up with the changing time and technology. Creating a virtual marketing teams with locations in Melbourne, Los Angeles, Shanghai and Bangalore or setting up a face-to-face team located in Melbourne are two options for company ABC. Having done research from different sources I found out that creating a virtual marketing team is better for the company. This report outlines the advantages of virtual team over traditional face-to-face team. The report will also mention disadvantage of the virtual, followed by a rebuttal.

Cost Saving

The cost associated with virtual marketing team is comparatively lower than face-to-face communication team. Virtual teams are defined as “groups of geographically, organizationally and/or time dispersed workers brought together by information technologies to accomplish one or more organization tasks’’ (Ebrahim, Ahmed and Taha, 2009, pg. 2654). A virtual team do not require a separate office space so the cost of electricity, office space, maintenance and internet costs are eliminated (Virtual team advantages and disadvantages, 2009, pg. 2). Since virtual teamwork from their home, company do not have to spend on work related trips (Ebrahim, Ahmed and Taha, 2009, pg. 2657). Consequently, the team members can save travelling expenses and time when working from their own place. In comparison to traditional face-to-face marketing team which requires an office space and additional costs associated with it, virtual marketing team is advantageous for the company.

Happier employees, better job performance People who from their home are found to be happier and more productive compared to those working from office (Jack, 2016, pg. 1). Tiny pulse which is cloud-based employee 4

engagement and feedback software conducted a survey aiming at 509 U.S people who work from home and around 200,00 people working from office. They were to rate their happiness level from 1 to 10 and found out that virtual workers rated 8.1 compared to average rating of 7 for those working full-time from office (Jack, 2016, pg. 1). With virtual team the working hours are flexible and can be carried out from any where unless you have access to computer and internet. This gives more family time and less work family conflict which has a negative impact on the job performance (Medina-Garrido, Biedma-Ferrer & Ramos-Rodríguez, 2017, pg. 43).

Disadvantage of Virtual Team One of the main disadvantages of virtual team would be establishing trust among the members. According to Kimble(2011, pg. 11) building trust in online transaction is a common challenge in e-commerce and same is the case for virtual team. Lack of trust for users remain one of the main barriers for any technology to succeed (Chandra, Srivastava & Theng, 2012, p. 803). However according to Kirkman et al. (2002, pg. 69) trust can be build based on performance consistency rather than a traditional face-to-face meeting. Swift response to texts or e-mails can also help build trust (Kirkman et al. ,2002, pg. 70). A good team leader is also necessary to keep the virtual team engaged in the given work and track performance of each members.

In conclusion, the benefits of virtual team outweigh the drawbacks associated with it and it is important for any organization to adopt virtual means of doing business. With virtual team, various cost related to office spaces can be eliminated along with travelling costs of the

employee. With the flexible working time and environment, the employees job satisfaction level is increased which results in the overall job performance as well. I would strongly recommend the company ABC to implement virtual team in various locations over setting up a traditional face-to-face team based in the Melbourne headquarters.
