There are some obvious signs of a chemical change, many of these can be mimicked by physical

changes. What are some more reliable ways a chemical change can be distinguished from a physical change? You can ask yourself will this substance go back to normal/ how it started. If not then a chemical change has happened because the change is permanent and cannot go back to the normal state. Ask yourself if there is a new substance that has been formed, in a chemical reaction there is a before (which is what the substance was in its original state) and there is an after (which is what was produced/ a new substance). If there is a new substance then a chemical change has occurred. List three examples of physical changes and three examples of chemical changes. Explain why these are chemical or physical changes. Chemical reactions: 1. Boiling an egg is a chemical reaction because the heat of the boiling water is changing the egg and making it tough and rubbery and causes permanent changes to the egg. 2. Baking a cake is a chemical reaction becuase you are going from the batter that is a liquid into something that is more of a solid. Heat helps the baking powder in the cake to produce tiny bubbles of gas that make the cake nice and light and fluffy. 3. Digesting food is a chemical reaction because your body breaks down all that food in your stomach and intestines into smaller, simpler molecules so that the body can more easily absorb the food.

Physical Changes: 1. Melting an ice cube is a physical change because it is going from a solid piece of ice to a liquid. This endures no chemical reaction. 2. Chopping wood is. physical change because the wood is physically staying the same and this element is not changing into another thing and the composition stays the same. 3. Boiling water is a physical change because the water boils it turns into steam, but when we take the water off the heat and the gas cools down then it turns into condensation/ it turns back into water. Explain the difference between a chemical change and a physical change. A chemical change is when there is a chemical reaction that has occurred that has turned that substance into another element or changes the substance completely. While a physical change is when matter does change, but not not involve any chemical reaction and the composition of that substance stays the same....
