Description

EXPOS-UA 4: INTERNATIONAL WRITING WORKSHOP 1 Michael Shum ([email protected]) | All times EST Section 16: MW 6:30-7:45 am This is your first-year writing course. For nearly a century, American colleges and universities have required this kind of course for entering first-year students. Traditionally, these classes have operated on the assumption that if you can teach a student to think “well” (i.e., critically, deeply, meaningfully, and logically), they will, from the force of these developed and thoughtful ideas, write well. In addition to this traditional approach, I also subscribe to its obverse: that good writing promotes good thinking. Language widens the scope of thought, and helps us interrogate and shape our own thinking. Good writing enables us to transform our murky, unexamined ideas into a form that can be expressed and disseminated to other readers and, perhaps more importantly, to ourselves. In other words, we must write in order to discover what we truly think and believe. In this class, we will slay some of our favorite darlings, beginning with “Write what you know.” Good writing feels alive, as if the author themselves is transforming through the act of writing the piece. Write what you don’t know. Write as a means to learn and to grow. Seek mystery in your writing—not certainty. CLASS FORMAT This class is fully on-line, and will comprise both synchronous and asynchronous elements:  24 “live” synchronous meetings on Zoom during our scheduled class time o https://nyu.zoom.us/j/96954395390?pwd=dDhBUi9sM0MzRzd3RGY1UVZSYmZsZz09  4 asynchronous Peer Reviews (PR) conducted on Edmodo The digital platforms required in this class will be Zoom, Edmodo, and Brightspace (our main class website). Please create a student account on Edmodo.com and join our class page: https://edmo.do/j/cvfmmi. MATERIALS  A way to take notes, either digital or analog  Readings and Handouts on Brightspace  A Digital Anthology for Writers (available “free” at http://bit.ly/ewp-reader)  Mercer Street, 2021-22 (available “free” at http://wp.nyu.edu/mercerstreet) GRADES (A=exceeds expectations, B=meets expectations, C or less=does not meet expectations) Good writing requires Space, Silence, and Time. Please try your best to be alone in a quiet, naturally-lit room when you do any writing for this class, whether it is homework or a major essay. HOMEWORK (10% of Grade) This course requires many informal homework assignments—please follow the Calendar and Announcements so there are no surprises. Late work will be penalized by at least 10%—submit work by the due date to avoid this penalty. Homework will be submitted on our Brightspace Discussion Forum and graded on a 10-point scale. CLASS ENGAGEMENT (5% of Grade) Please attend class on time, having completed all readings and assignments, and ready to actively, enthusiastically, and respectfully participate and engage in class activities. Please try to have your camera on in class (if there is a reason you cannot have your camera on, please e-mail me to let me know). ATTENDANCE Attendance will be taken every class. Five unexcused absences will result in a 10% penalty to your final grade (e.g., from 85% to 75%); seven unexcused absences will result in failure in the course. Religious observance and documented illness/family emergency are grounds for an absence to be excused. Your academic advisor will be informed if you miss two classes in a row, or 3 out of 8. CONFERENCING If you want to speak with me one-on-one about your ideas, questions, essay drafts, and the class overall, please schedule a conference over e-mail ([email protected]). Conferencing will take place in my personal Zoom room (https://nyu.zoom.us/j/4870413822). Please plan to conference with me twice during the semester. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY In this class, we work with ideas and language. It is deeply important to keep track of which of these you have developed yourself and which of these have come to you from others. According to the CAS policy on Academic Integrity, “Academic honesty means that the work you submit—in whatever form—is original.” This means that:  You may not submit work written by someone else as though it were written by you; and  You may not submit work you previously or contemporaneously submitted for another course. Please be aware that I am obliged to report any violation of this policy to your academic advisor. THE WRITING CENTER The Writing Center provides additional support for student writers at NYU. I strongly encourage you to use this resource to get help with your writing assignments for this class. Writing Center consultants are EWP faculty; they can provide an outside perspective on a draft, and help you develop ideas and better understand where you want to take an essay. You can book appointments on-line: https://nyu.mywconline.com/.
