3. CONTEXT 3.1 HISTORY Jamia Millia Islamia, an institution originally established at Aligarh in united provinces, India in 1920 became a central university by an act of the Indian parliament in 1988. In Urdu language, Jamia means ‘university’, and Millia means ‘national’ and Islamia means ‘Muslims’ i.e. that composed “a university of Muslim nation”

Fig: 2 http://www.frontline.in/the-nation/a-blot-on-indias-secularism/article9721362.ece

Under the colonial British rule, two dominant trends joined hands and contributed towards in the birth of Jamia. In the political climate of 1920, the two trends gravitated together with Mahatma Gandhi as a catalyst. The anti-colonial activism signified by the Khilafat and the proindependence aspirations symbolised by the non-cooperation movement of the Indian national congress helped to harness creative energies and the subsequent making of Jamia Millia Islamia. Rabindranath Tagore called it “one of the most progressive educational institutions of India”. The known freedom fighter and Muslim theologian, maulana Mahmud Hasan, laid the foundation stone of Jamia Millia Islamia at Aligarh on Friday, 29 October 1920. Considering the difficult circumstances under which it started, the list of its first teachers is very impressive: On 22 November 1920, hakim Ajmal khan was elected the first chancellor of Jamia. Mohamed Ali Jauhar became Jamia’s first vice chancellor, The saying, ‘when going gets tough the tough gets going’ cannot be truer about Jamia. As the crisis loomed large, hakim Ajmal khan, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed Ansari and Abdul Majid Khawaja— the first trio—supported by Gandhi ji shifted Jamia from Aligarh to Karol bagh, in New Delhi in 1925.

On 1 March 1935, The Foundation Stone For A School Building Was Laid At Okhla, Then A Non-Descript Village In The Southern Outskirts Of Delhi. In 1936,

As Jamia Millia Islamia was stoned for Muslim education with modern idea so, to show or cast that idea the infrastructure of Jamia was chosen to be Islamic architecture. Same as in most of the buildings they followed same idea to develop the façade. And by following same ideology the Fazlur Rahman Khan hostel is the best example of Modern and Islamic Architecture. http://jmi.ac.in/aboutjamia/profile/history/historical_note-13

3.2 Fazlur R. Khan (1929 — 1982) Structural engineer Fazlur Rahman Khan (1929 — 1982) ushered in a renaissance in skyscraper construction during the second half of the 20th century. He was a pragmatic visionary, establishing structural systems that subsequently formed the basis of high-rise design: the framed tube and the tube-in-tube, the trussed tube, the bundled tube, the composite system utilizing both concrete and structural steel.

The series of progressive ideas that Fazlur Khan

Fig: 5

developed for efficient high-rise construction in the 1960s and 1970s was validated in his own work. His design for

Dr. Fazlur Rahman Khan

Chicago’s 100-story John Hancock Center established the trussed tube system, his design for the 110-story Sears Tower (the world’s tallest building from its completion in 1974 until 1996; the building is now called Willis Tower) initiated the bundled tube system. Fazlur Khan epitomized both structural engineering achievement and creative collaborative effort between architect and engineer. Only when architectural design is grounded in structural realities, he believed — thus celebrating architecture’s nature as a constructive art, rooted in the earth — can “the resulting aesthetics . . . have a transcendental value and quality.” He was always clear about the purpose and responsibility of architecture. Khan’s characteristic statement to an editor in 1971, having just been selected Construction’s Man of the Year by Engineering News-Record, is commemorated in a plaque in Ontario Center (446 E. Ontario, Chicago) “The technical man must not be lost in his own technology. He must be able to appreciate life; and life is art, drama, music, and most importantly, people.” https://drfazlurrkhan.com/ https://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/2017/04/03/fazlur-rahman-khan-genius-whose-simple-invention-made-todays/

3.5 ORIENTATION The orientation of the building is east facing and the building is placed along the north. The concept of orientation was not based on sun path but based on wind flow direction. As the other hostel building in the campus was facing the ventilation problem so that the architect or engineer choose its form and orientation in such a way that it could not be affected by the wind.
