Description

DMU’s Sustainability Report 2015/16 Feedback from PG International Business Students (CSR Module: CORP5060) Positive comments    

Easy to read. Clear structure. Engaging (i.e. colourful, good use of graphics and pictures). Transparent (i.e. figures / tables at end showing progress and to support claims made in the report).

Areas for improvement 

Report lacks detail in general and does not reflect the wide range of activities that DMU organises and supports (students noted that much of what Karl Letten highlighted in the lecture is not included in the report). Include a contents page. Include a definition of sustainability (what does sustainability mean to DMU?). Move governance page to front of report (i.e. after first slide) and separate who and how. o Who = who manages sustainability (i.e. sustainability team, names, titles) o How = how is sustainability managed e.g. task force (meets how often?), break-out groups e.g. ESD forum. Include (if possible) a statement of support from DMU’s Vice-Chancellor (Dominic Shellard) to reflect business sustainability reports that open with an introduction / statement from the CEO. More information on page 4 (making an impact) i.e. how does DMU engage students and staff (what projects exactly?). Different figures given for water consumption in main report (page 9 = 76,629m3) and table (page 19 = 73,601m3). Difficult to interpret figures at end of report and what they show e.g. demonstrate that DMU is performing well or poorly in relation to other Universities and/or an organisation of this size? Include statements from students and staff (with pictures) e.g. what sustainability means to them, their impression (endorsement) of DMU’s sustainability approach, how they apply sustainability principles in their day-today activities (and how DMU encourages this / makes this possible). Report focusses heavily on environmental sustainability and more balance needed e.g. social responsibility / sustainability. This can be achieved partly by restructuring the report and putting ‘social’ elements together under the banner of ‘social responsibility’ or ‘social sustainability’ (e.g. making an impact, role in community, and teaching and research)....
