Introduction For most students, beginning to study for the DAT is an intimidating process. What do you use? How long do you study for? What is the “best” way to perform well? What do you need to cover each day? I have written this guide to help provide some structure to your study approach to the DAT. This guide is by no means an absolute method set in stone – you can follow it to the letter, or you can (and most likely will) use it as a template that is modified as you continue studying to match the pace you are most comfortable with. This study schedule is only my suggested pace, process, and materials; as you spend time learning and practicing, you will make modifications to it and develop it as your own.

About Myself My name is Ali Sohraby and I am the creator of the popular Feralis Biology Notes and a member of the DATBooster team. I just recently graduated from Columbia University College of Dental Medicine and I am currently an Orthodontics resident at the University of Texas A&M. I took the DAT long after I finished college and had to re-learn every subject area from scratch to prepare for this exam. Through a dedicated preparation process, I was able to score well on the DAT:

To date, I has worked with many students to help prepare them for the DAT. To take this a step further, the team here at Booster Prep created DATBooster to help students take their DAT scores to the next level. My goal now is to apply my own study experience and what I have learned to help create an effective study guide for others. I sincerely believe most students can score just as well as I did with the right planning, resources, and practice. As you prepare for the DAT, always keep in mind that you are just as capable as anyone else of doing exceptionally well if you are willing to put in the work.

Study Schedule Structure This study schedule is broken up into THREE main phases: Phase #1: Content Learning (4 weeks) The focus of the first phase is re-learning the content for each of the subjects of the test, as well as becoming familiar with the basic structure of the DAT’s six sections. The PAT, QR, and RC sections require minimal pre-existing knowledge, therefore you can begin practicing for these sections. Phase #2: Practice Questions/Tests & Review (3 weeks) Once the content learning phase is over, you are now ready to begin taking practice questions and full practice tests to assess your understanding of the material. During this time, you will also continue to review the content you learned in the first phase, and modify your notes as needed to strengthen areas you are weak in. Phase #3: Practice Tests & Emphasis on Memorization (3 weeks) In the final three weeks leading up to your exam, your preparation will be focused on full practice tests, memorizing the content that was learned and reviewed in the first two phases, and reviewing the mistakes you have made.

When should I start studying? The ideal time to start studying is immediately after finishing the requisite coursework for the DAT – particularly Biology 1 & 2, General Chemistry 1 & 2, and Organic Chemistry 1 & 2. Many pre-dental (and pre-medical) students take these courses during their first and second year of college, which makes the summer after your second year a perfect time to take the test. However, not all students follow a traditional path throughout their undergraduate studies. Regardless of when you took these courses, once you have completed them, the best time to study is when you can dedicate a period of several weeks to studying for the test without any other distractions. For students still in college, this is usually going to be a winter or summer break period. In general, it is best to avoid starting late (e.g. less than 4 weeks), or too early (e.g. more than 16 weeks) before your test date. If you are a current student that plans on attending dental school immediately after finishing college, you should aim to have the DAT taken before the fall semester of your senior year at the latest so that your scores are ready during the application period.

Modifications There are many reasons that you may need to modify this study schedule. In the event that you do, please feel free to make adjustments to the schedule to suit your individual needs. The best place to make these adjustments would be primarily in Phase 2 where you can limit the amount of DATDestroyer questions you want to go through.

Phase 1: Content Learning The first phase is focused on building up the foundation of knowledge needed to perform well on the test. This is the longest phase and the most critical to doing well – remember that the purpose of the DAT is to assess what you actually know. Many students place too much focus on practice questions and assume that if they do enough of them, they will see similar enough questions on the real test and do well. The DAT is not a predictable exam – the only way to guarantee a strong performance is to make sure that your content review has been as thorough as possible.
