When we use visual aids like pictures, flash cards, maps, charts, card board figures, learners can increase and improve cognitive capacities and memory. Besides, when in a class is used these materials students can associate the images with meaning which leads the memory to be more active. Also, the use of audio materials such as phonographic discs, tapes recorder, tapes, radio, and television can develop power of oral and written communication and build up clearer and richer concepts as well. Therefore, the use of audio-visual materials and methods in foreign language increases the effectiveness of learning by helping the learners to assimilate ideas in a meaningful and remarkable way. Advocates say that through using visual aids the long term retention is stimulated. According to Reid an English professor at the University of Wyoming, claims that "students learn better when they are visually oriented by drawings and pictures which help them store information efficiently, because it goes to the long-term memory which makes a significant learning, especially of language"(1987:17). They enable you to appeal to more than one sense at the same time, thereby increasing the audience's understanding and retention level. With pictures, the concepts or ideas you present are no longer simply words - but words plus images.
