Ourgroupisassessingwhethersurroundinglanduseshasaneffectontheparticlesizedistributionofbedsedimentsforfarmdams.Wehypothesizethatintensiveland 4 useswillcausegreatersedimentmobilizationfrompaddocksandthiswillcauseaverageparticlesizetobesmallerindamsthathaveahistoryofanimalstockingor intensivecropping(canolaplanting)comparedtofallowpaddocksorthebushlandreserve.Wewillcollect5sedimentsamplesofapproximately100cubiccmsfromeachof thefarmdamslistedaboveusingamodifiedEckmangrabsampler.Thesamplesarerandomlylocatedwithineachdam.Wherepossiblewewillwadetothesamplingpoint totakethesample.Thelargerdamsarelikelytorequiretheuseofasmallinflatableboattocollectthesamplebecausewaterwillbetoodeeptowade. WehavedevelopedSOPsforthefieldactivitiesandthesewillbeincludedinourVirtualCampReportforformalassessment. TutorKattelaccompaniesgroupsintothefieldwherepossible.Wewillnotundertakefieldworkinvolvingtheinflatableboat unlessheispresent.ThisneedwillbeassessedonDay1ofthefieldcamp.

TheEckmangrabsamplercomesfromtheGeotechnicallabintheDepartmentofInfrastructureEngineering.Geotechstaff haveprovidedtrainingtotutorKattelinitsuse,whointurnwilldemonstrateitsusetousonthefirstfieldvisit.

Weunderstandthatsimilarsamples,includingtheuseoftheinflatableboat,havebeentakenaspartoftheMonitoring EnvironmentalImpactsfieldcamppreviously.Coordinatorandtutorexperiencewillbevaluableforsafelyundertakingthis activity.
