Finding Heart Rate In order to achieve the maximum benefit from your aerobic exercise, you must know a few things about your heart rate. For this activity you will need a watch with a second hand or a digital watch with a seconds readout. You will also need to know how to find your pulse. The easiest way I’ve found to find my pulse is to place the index and middle finger of my left hand directly under my jaw just to the left of my throat. There is a major blood vessel here that is very easy to find and will quickly let you know if you’re still alive. See if you can find your pulse in this place right now. Now that you’ve found out that you’re still ticking, count the number of times that your heart beats in 60 seconds, that is your resting heart rate. How to Determine Your Heart Rate Training Range: Percent of Heart Rate Max: Find your Maximum Heart Rate (HR max) HR max = 220 - age Find the lower limit of your Heart Rate Training Range Low Intensity Heart Rate = HR max X .55 Find the medium range of your Heart Rate Training Range Medium Intensity Heart Rate = HR max X .70 Find the upper limit of your Heart Rate Training Range High Intensity Heart Rate = HR max X .90 YOUR NAME: HEART RATE MEASUREMENT
