Flawless Consulting Chapter 8-9 # Question 1 According to the book, to deal with resistance, the consultant needs the skill to ask clients to put directly into words what the client is experiencing–– to ask the client to be authentic. In Asian culture, however, it is way more difficult to honestly express one’s feeling. So, what the consultant can do to overcome this cultural distinctiveness? I want to put the emphasis on two big things to make clients from Asian culture to be authentic. First is ‘Patience’. Second is ‘Building personal relationship’. The consultants should cultivate the skill to wait for clients from a different background to become comfortable enough to communicate with them honestly. It’s not only about communication. Also the aspect of attitude, the consultants should not give too much pressure on the clients regarding the speed of process, results or any other things. For a second one, the reason why I emphasized personal relationship is that some consultants(especially from western culture) are usually more goal(task)oriented. They don’t regard having a personal relationship as an essential or important element for dealing with clients’ resistance. Even after realizing clients being too resistant to their consulting suggestions or plans, they only try to find what was wrong in the contents, not in the relationship part. Thus, the consultants need to look back on how their relationship was and try to be intimate with their clients through communications, having meals together, or even a drink(especially in Asian culture, they believe people can become honest once they are drunk)....
