ED 200 – History and Philosophy of Education

NAME: Madeleine Shimazaki

CAPTURE: “Forgetting the Questions: The Problem of Education Reform” by Diane Ravitch PURPOSE (Why): To explain how the school systems help students gain intelligence and better opportunities in the future Central Messages (What): 1. Education has become a way to lower poverty and go towards higher education 2. More radical philosophies have been incorporated in schools 3. Gaining intelligence is the purpose of education

Validations/Applications (How): 1. In the 1960s, educational expansion was occurring and wanted to reach goals that may never be reached. They want to increase the intelligence and skills of young minds so they have better options. With the increased introduction of diversity, they hope for less prejudice. This will enable all races to have equal chance in success (Ravitch) 2. More and more critics want a radical change where politics and social reform is more important to learn. Competition for higher grades is increasing because it is getting harder to find a good college that accepts only decent grades. There are standardized that have become more essential to get into college (Ravitch). 3. Ravitch said “the essential purpose of schooling is to develop the powers of intelligence: thinking, knowing, reflecting, observing, imagining, appreciating, questioning, and judging.” Curriculum should aim to give students every opportunity to grow. They need to know all the fundamentals before they can truly decide what they want to do in the future (Ravitch, 217).

VALUES (So What): 1. there have been a lot more ways for children to get better education even with monetary problems 2. With social reforms occurring more, there have been critics who voice that schools need to change 3. Education is mainly for learning and not just doing well on tests and getting good grades Works Cited Ravitch, Diane. “Forgetting the Questions: The Problem of Education Reform” 1983, pg. 210-220...
