Description

“Fingerprint Scan,” 1983 by Joe Testa-Secca “Fingerprint Scan” is a piece that displays an embedded image of a face within a fingerprint. There are lines all throughout the work; some are long, short, straight, curved, black, and orange. The lines are significant because they hold power over the piece; they are what makes the piece. Not only do the lines form the face but they also form the fingerprint itself, ultimately drawing in the viewer to thoroughly focus on the different components of the work. The colors, which are black, orange, and white, are limited, but they contrast throughout, especially with the use of orange. The blacks and whites represent the neutralities in the piece and the orange represents the warm tones in the piece. The piece also has light and dark values that form the facial aspect. The light values are the background and the dark values are portrayed through the lines and their various shadings. The shape/form of the work are represented by face and the fingerprint as a whole. Lastly, the space in this work is used in a simplistic manner. The fingerprint and the face are the main focal points and the white background is complimentary. Testa-Secca used color serigraph, which is a printed design that is produced by the use of a silkscreen, on paper to create this piece. The use of this technique is what makes the piece unique because each of the lines are able to be printed onto the paper in a strong and pigmented manner. The paper based piece is strong in its sense of variety throughout the lines, colors, shapes, etc. Testa-Secca brought out his innovative artistic mind and created a piece that was different and included themes of obscurity, creativity, and illusions.

“Nocturne,” 2009 by Joe Elisabeth Condon “Nocturne” is a lively piece that possesses a wide array of colors and tones. There are various lines in the piece that are long, short, and curved. The lines add a subtle sense of variation to the piece that give the viewer some points to look at. The colors, which are black, yellow, blue, grey, teal, green, purple, and white, are vibrant and consume the piece overall. The blacks, greys, and whites represent the neutralities in the piece. The blues, purples, teals, and greens represent the cool undertones in the piece. The yellows are the only warm undertones the piece provides. The work also has light and dark values that add contrast. The shape/form of the work are represented by the various blurbs of color and shapes within. Lastly, the space in this work is taken over by the colors throughout. “Nocturne” is a piece that exudes a certain tone and mood of adventure and excitement due to the explosive colors used....
