Free-Will & Determinism: The 3 Main Theories Hard Determinism: (a) Every event is causally necessitated; (b) Free-will does not exist; (c) (contra-causal) free-will is required for moral responsibility (Incompatibilism), from which it follows that (d) no one is truly morally responsible for her/his actions. Soft Determinism (Compatibilism): (a) Every event is causally necessitated; (b) Free-will exists, (c) Free-will is required for moral responsibility, and (d) free-will is compatible with complete causation of every event, including every human action. Libertarianism: (Contra-Causal Freedom) (a) Free-will exists, (b) contra-causal free-will is required for moral responsibility (Incompatibilism), and, therefore, (c) we are sometimes genuinely morally responsible. Campbell: When are we (morally?) justified in holding a person morally responsible for her/his action? Campbell claims that free will is incompatible with sufficient causation of all of our actions (and decisions). Free will What is a free act? Is a free act a totally uncaused act? If so, is that not a random event, for which we would NOT hold a person responsible?...
