FSO220 CASE STUDY AIR CANADA FLIGHT 797 QUESTIONS: 1. Summarize the details around Air Canada 797 that contributed to the emergency landing at the Cincinnati Airport. Answer: Air Canada Flight 797 was a scheduled trans-border flight from Dallas/Fort Worth to Toronto and Montreal. On June 2, 1983, flight attendants are busy distributing the dinner for the passengers. One of the passengers smell a peculiar smell coming from the toilet cubicle at the back of the plane, releasing toxic gases and smoke and making passengers on board to suffocate and feel unwell. Laura then told Benetti to investigate the lavatory, and he sprayed fire extinguisher, the other flight attendants moved the passengers forward and Kayama went to the cockpit and informed the other flight crew about the smoke in the lavatory. After that the Captain started to put the mask on and told the first officer to go and investigate. The first officer checked the back and said that the thick smoke is filling from three to four rows and that he could not see the aft lavatory. And then Benetti talked to the first officer that he did not believed that the fire and smoke came from the trash bin. The first officer decided to go back and told the Captain and suggested to descend. However, Benetti suddenly informed the Captain that the smoke ease-up. As a result, the Captain is confused so he sent the first officer to check again. The Captain expected the fire would be put out, because they believed that it was still in the trash bin. Shortly after, the “master caution” light and the Captain called the air traffic controller and notified them that Flight 797 had an electrical problem. The first officer then went back to the aft lavatory, when he was about to touch the door, he said it felt hot and decided not to open it. And then he informed the Captain about descending, that is when the Captain felt the first officer’s urgency in his voice and immediately descended. The heat of the fire and fresh oxygen from the open exit doors created flashover conditions ninety seconds after the plane landed and the doors were opened, and the plane's interior quickly became engulfed in flames, killing 23 passengers who had yet to evacuate the aircraft. The Captain was the last to come out from the aircraft. There were 21 Canadians and two Americans killed. Many of the bodies had been completely burned. Almost all of the victims were in the aircraft's forward half, between the wings and the cockpit. Some people were in the aisles, while others were still in their seats. In the video that I watched it the bodies' blood samples revealed high levels of cyanide, fluoride, and carbon monoxide, chemicals produced by the burning plane. The NTSB then started the investigation about the accident. 2. Based on your understanding of inflight communication, how could this emergency have been handled differently? Answer: Based on my understanding, the emergency could have been handled differently, if they decided to immediately institute an emergency descent. If only they have decided to descend sooner, possibly they could have saved the people who died from the accident. It was really time

consuming finding out the problem that started the smoke. One of the cabin crew said, that he saw curls of thick black smoke coming out from the seams around the walls of the lavatory.
