GDS 1) Introduction to Global Distribution System (GDS)

Global Distribution System or GDS is a computerized network. The most common uses for GDS is in the tourism industry, mainly for airlines, hospitality companies, and car rental companies. It allows travel agencies and their clients to access travel data, compare reservations options and book travel from multiple different vendors in real time to quickly and efficiently create an itinerary for their clients.

Global distribution systems serve as a link between vendors and service providers.Although the majority of large GDSs are linked to major travel agencies, smaller and less costly GDSs may offer a limited amount of travel agencies.

Vendors register and link their inventory to a global distribution system. Customers can buy from a seller using the GDS's various portals once they've been connected. Each service provider receives real-time updated inventory from the airline or hospitality vendor to prevent overbooking. Moreover, not only do vendors show their inventory, but they can also update items and prices automatically. This allows vendors to use a dynamic pricing system that varies across all of their portals in real time.
