DIFFERENTIATE HISTORY FROM THE PAST...

Description

BSHM 1104

1. Differentiate history from the past. -History by contrast is an interpretation or rather a process by which people interpret records left over from the past. History is a process of interpreting evidence in a thoughtful and informed way. History is the narrative that gives meaning, sense and explanatory to the past in the present. https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-difference-between-the-past-andhistory#:~:text=History%20is%20a%20process%20of,the%20past%20in%20the %20present.&text=I%20think%20the%20word%20'past,events%20happened%20in %20the%20past. 2. How will the following persons benefit from studying history: 

Citizens - History matters because in the same way that it can make our leaders better informed, it can make our citizens more informed and perhaps encourage them to be more active both in politics and in their communities.

Government - There is little sense that the kinds of evidence used by historians can be a basis for policy: documentary records, archives or serial data, for instance. They might reveal what “worked” but not what is most cost-effective. When it comes to forming political or administrative decisions, the future still gets much more attention than the past. One benefit of historical perspective is learning that it wasn’t always that way. For centuries, even millennia, historians advised rulers, enlightened citizens and shaped policy.

Future Generation - History is more than simply looking backwards and studying the past – it is also about critically engaging with the present and the future. It is about individuals, families, nations and the global community. In a world of fastmoving technological change and a preoccupation with the future, it might seem there is little need for history and for reflecting on an apparently very different past. Yet historical knowledge is a powerful currency for the 21st century. The huge contemporary challenges of climate change, migration, inequality and the future of capitalism all require a long-term global perspective and historically

framed arguments. Too often, policy decisions and political debate are characterised by short-termism. History, properly studied, should inform public policy and democratic debate. History teaches us about continuities as well as changes, and reminds us about the timeless qualities of human behaviour. It enshrines collective experience. History is vital to the development of both a national and an individual sense of identity; it allows us to make more informed choices about the future and to hold politicians and policymakers to account. https://www.historyextra.com/period/studying-history-is-the-ultimate-passport-to-thefuture/#:~:text=History%20is%20vital%20to%20the,politicians%20and%20policymakers %20to%20account. 3. What is historiography and how is it different from Historicity? Give at least 3. -the writing of history, especially the writing of history based on the critical examination of sources, the selection of particular details from the authentic materials in those sources, and the synthesis of those details into a narrative that stands the test of critical examination. The term historiography also refers to the theory and history of historical writing. https://www.britannica.com/topic/historiography -Historicity is the authentication of characters in history, as opposed to legend or myth. For example, if you watch the TV drama series Vikings, understanding the historical accuracy of events around the legendary, composite character of Ragnar Lothbrok is historicity while historiography is the writing of history, and the understanding of how the interpretations of historians change over time. Historicity is the identification of authenticated events, characters, peoples, patterns, etc, in the study of man's past. Historicity - Search of truth in any historical characters as opposing to myths and supernatural by authenticating with proof and possible logical answers. It was to deduce WHAT REALLY HAPPENED. https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-difference-between-history-historicity-andhistoriography#:~:text=Simply%20put%2C%20History%20is%20The,how%20exactly %20history%20played%20out.

4. Differentiate history from prehistory. Where does one end and where does one begin?

-History is the study of the past starting from the time period when the writing system was introduced and written records were maintained. Research on History is carried out by historians. Rare manuscripts written on leaves, dried animals skins, and papers are some of the sources used to study history. Study of History can be classified into different domains like Ancient History, Contemporary History, Modern History, Political History, Military History, Cultural History, Economic History, Environmental History, History based on different Geographical locations, People’s history, Intellectual history etc. While, Prehistory is the study of the past, even before writing was invented and written records were maintained. It is the study of the time period between usage of stone tools and invention of the writing system. Research on prehistory is carried out by archaeologists and anthropologists who use excavation, geology, molecular genetics, palaeontology etc. Hence a wide variety of social and natural sciences are used to study prehistory. Prehistory studies 3 different time periods – stone age, bronze age and iron age. https://byjus.com/free-ias-prep/difference-between-history-and-prehistory/ 5. Differentiate history from other humanistic or socio scientific disciplines. History and Political Science - History is the laboratory of Political Science. Today’s political leaders learn a lot from the past events. This is partially because of the fact that human beings know to learn from the mistakes of others. History deals with concrete facts. It is these concrete facts which help today’s political leaders and activists learn from the experiences of the political leaders of yesteryears. They study their actions and observe carefully their outcomes, and thus take the course of action which best suits the needs of today’s time. History is the balance sheet of the activities of man in past and it includes his political activities also. Most of the political decisions made today are on behalf of this balance sheet. https://lexpress.in/legal-articles/relationship-between-political-science-and-history History and Sociology - History is the study of past events. It also includes a survey of conditions and developments in economic, religious and social affairs. Sociology is the study of the pattern of human interaction, culture, and social relationships that surround everyday life. https://byjus.com/free-ias-prep/difference-between-sociology-andhistory/#:~:text=History%20is%20the%20study%20of,relationships%20that %20surround%20everyday%20life. History and Anthropology - History is the study of ‘history’ whereas anthropology studies about most facets of human beings. History has a broader scope compared to anthropology. The one who helps in writing accounts about history is a historian whereas the one who studies about anthropology is called an anthropologist. History

seeks to discover the answers of the cause and effects of certain events whereas anthropology primarily deals with homo sapiens (the humans). The key objective of history is to know and understand the past whereas anthropology is geared towards discovering the true nature of human beings.
