Syllabus for fall 2020 general chemistry with Professor Burt Goldberg. It includes his remote policies and the general layout of the class....

Description

General Chemistry 2: OFF TRACK, Fall 2020, CHEM-UA.126.001 Lecture day & time; Tuesday & Thursday 9:30-10:45AM, online through ZOOM. Dr. Burt Goldberg; Email: [email protected] or [email protected] Office hours will be on Tuesday,Wednesday & Thursday from 11:30 to 12:30 PM and will be posted on Zoom. Professor Richard Orr will be doing Recitations and lab with you. He will introduce himself in a separate syllabus for lab. Welcome to General ( Inorganic) Chemistry 2, Lecture and Lab. This Fall 2020, your GenChem 2 course is totally online. It will be held on Zoom found on our NYUCLASSES site. This includes Lecture, Recitation and Lab (if you have chosen or wish now to not be on campus) virtually online as well. If for your own personally for safety, reasons I totally understand your choosing to change to virtual lab instead of on campus lab. If you cannot come to my posted Office Hours, you can make AN APPOINTMENT FOR ANOTHER TIMES, please email for an appointment. A good time to ask your questions is during lecture and recitation, which means that you need to read the chapter prior to each class (lecture or recitation) and come to recitation with your homework and lecture questions. Your success in this course will depend on how seriously you take your preparation. Your grade is dependent on your performance on homework, exams, quizzes, and attendance at recitation and lecture. Extra credit will not be offered to raise your grades! It is your responsibility to be prepared and to come to class. Having not read the material to be covered during the lecture is a serious error in judgment with possible devastating consequences. I strongly urge students to form collaborative study groups, and to discuss your answers to the strategies for solving homework assigned questions with the members of their group. It is up to you to do ALL of the assignment. Remember you can Zoom as much as you want with each other as easily as going to library. Punctuality is necessary and expected! This is a large class so please be on time. I expect that you will be present for ALL examinations. If you are ill, please notify me no less than 24 hours beforehand, not after the examination has taken place. I will expect an official doctor’s note only (a report from Student Health is acceptable). Grades are based on 4 examinations. If you miss a midterm examination , you first must present documentation of why you missed the exam to me at office hours only and only then will I discuss the possibility of the makeup exam. Course Goals. The main goal is to complete your basic foundations in chemical reactions and the rules that govern chemical reactions. In this semester you will study the affect of chemical reactions in solutions, aqueous or gaseous; the colligative properties of solutions; the periodic behavior of elements reactions in main-groups; the rate and mechanisms of chemical reactions. You will understand the formation of Equilibrium in chemical reactions and what factors affect Equilibrium. To understand how acid-base rxns are a

special case of Equilibrium. How does thermodynamics control the direction of a reaction? To understand the factors that affect oxidation-reduction reactions. Lecture is very important, will lecture by power-point slides, and will do problems on the board. Missing a lecture is then a big deal. Please do try not to miss lecture. The same for recitation were the Professor Orr will go over assignment problems. I have posted the syllabus, the assignments will be posted separately. What you are having trouble with, is what to ask about in recitation. There is always a recitation quiz.

[I have learned how to connect my iPAD to my computer and use it as a blackboard if I need to draw or write something, this for me is as major achievement. Please excuse my handwriting and drawing.] CONNECT-McGRAW-HILL-BYRTEWAVE This semester and possibly for a while we are using a commercial online service due to how poor or experience was with NYUCLASSES and large groups. Your exams, homework and recitation quizzes are all on CONNECT. CONNECT is a product of McGraw – Hill who publishes your textbook. We used it this summer in GenChem 1&2 found it ‘better’ than NYUCLASSES. As part of your registration for Connect you will also receive an ebook of our text through BYRTEWAVE. At the end of each chapter will be a quiz on LEARN SMART ( LS). This will have an assignment completion date and quiz must be done before the assignment closing date. It will not be graded but completion of the chapter’s quizzes during the semester will add 10points to your lowest test grade. This is separate form a Homework Assignment ( HMWRK). Grading 100-95= A, 94-90=A-, 89-85=B+, 84-80=B, 79-75=B-. 74 to 70 = C +, 69 to 65 = C, 64-60=C-, if your grades put you below this I will strongly urge you to drop the course. The times for your exams are: 9:30-10:45AM always on a Thursday in class. The dates are; and the Final Exam, tentatively. THE FINAL IS CUMULATIVE. You grade will be made up from the following: 10% for each midterm exams (3), 15% for the FINAL EXAM, 15% for the homework assignment and quizzes in Recitation. We will not check for correctness of assignment but completeness every week, if not handed in when asked, you have a problem, a big problem, doing assignments are professional behavior, no matter how well you are not doing assignments are deeply frowned upon. 20% of your final grade is for Laboratory.

There will be a lecture quiz during the first 10 minutes of lecture. You must be on time . MAKEUPS QUIZZIES ARE NOT EVER GIVEN FOR RECITATION QUIZZES. Midterms,15 pts each X 3 =45% Final exam =20% Recitation =15% (completed hmwrk + rct quizzes) Lab final grade =20% If you going to miss a recitation and want to go to another section that is only possible with MY permission. You must prior to missing a recitation email ME and if the reason for missing recitation warrants allowing you to making up the recitation BY GOING TO ANOTHER recitation I will give permission. Missing recitation class is very serious matter, and never excused out of hand! There are NO MAKEUP Quizzes EVER! Text is Chemistry, Molecular Nature…8e Silberberg.
