Description

Syllabus Saint Joseph’s University Course #: PHY 102 – OL1, CRN: 20257

Summer, 2021 Piotr Habdas

General Physics II Monday, Wednesday, 5:00 pm – 7:55 pm Online Course Description: This two-semester sequence is an algebra-based physics course intended primarily for students majoring in biological sciences. Emphasis is on developing both qualitative and quantitative understanding of fundamental physical principles, and the ability to apply those principles to analyze physical phenomena. Topics include: electrostatics, magnetism, and optics. Corequisites: PHY 102L. PHY 101 is prerequisite to PHY 102.

Course Learning Objectives By the end of this course, the students will: • gain an appreciation for the science of physics and see its connection to other natural sciences of chemistry and biology and to real life situations. • expand their capacity for critical analysis and problem solving. • have a solid foundation in the concepts of electricity, magnetism, and optics. Assignments and Evaluation: The lecture, although containing approximately 20 people, will be conducted in as informal a manner as possible. Questions and comments will be welcomed since they often bring important issues to the surface. Reading and partial comprehension of the text material prior to attending lecture will enhance your lecture experience. Coming to lecture completely unprepared will result in an anxietyproducing atmosphere. Homework problems will be assigned each class through online homework system. You should work with others, but solutions must be written independently. There will be two regular examinations administered during the semester. The examinations will consist of problems not unlike those assigned for homework and conceptual questions that deal more with exploring the theory of the material. Exams will require about a half class period or exam period. The student should have command of the pertinent formulae for each chapter. There will also be a cumulative final exam. The final will attempt to synthesize the material from the entire semester. Physics, like any other course of study, builds on itself and thus the material from end of the semester will require knowledge of the material from the first day of the course. PLEASE NOTE: There are no make-up exams in this course. In the event there should be an emergency in your life, please be prepared to provide substantive documentation or have the Dean’s Office notify me. Ideally, I should be notified in advance should this be the case.

Syllabus During the exam, students will work independently, violation of exam policies or distracting the class will result in dismissal from the exam room or Zoom session, assigning a grade of zero (for the exam and/or for the course), and reporting the incident to student affairs for disciplinary actions. No questions are allowed during the exam. Exams may be closed book, notes, etc. I will notify you before an exam and provide you with any necessary materials like equation sheets. Remote exams will be given through the Quiz option in Canvas. If you are taking the exam remotely: - No internet help (search engines, etc.). - No cell phones in the room. - No emailing or messaging during the exam. - Have your camera on and the microphone unmuted using Zoom. - Submit the exam when you are done with all the questions. The password for exams will be messaged through the Zoom chat at the start of the exam.

Attendance and Contact Policy: All students are required to attend all lectures. If for some reason you are unable to attend a scheduled lecture, please get in contact with me after your absence as soon as possible to see what material you missed. Do not completely rely on a friend since what he or she might have thought important may differ from what I might have emphasized. Syllabus Requests for Accommodations: Reasonable academic accommodations may be provided to students who submit appropriate documentation of their disability. Students are encouraged to contact Dr. Christine Mecke in the Office of Student Disability Services, Bellarmine, B-10, at [email protected]; or at 610.660.1774 (voice), or 610.660.1620 (TTY), for assistance with this issue. The university also provides an appeal/grievance procedure regarding requested or offered reasonable accommodations through Dr. Mecke's office. More information: www.sju.edu/sds CLASS RECORDING Be advised that by taking this course you consent to some or all class sessions being recorded by the instructor (and in some cases with assistance by the SJU Office of Information Technology). Recordings are intended to focus on the instructor but the voices and/or likenesses of other individuals in the class may also be recorded. Video and/or sound recordings will be stored at a secure SJU video management platform for one year and will be used or distributed only for educational or academic purposes, e.g., to allow for remote learning for those students not physically present in class or unable to attend a synchronous online class session. If you have questions about the use of such technology or you do not consent to being recorded, you must discuss and resolve your concerns with your instructor before the end of the drop/add period. SEXUAL HARASSMENT, MISCONDUCT & ASSAULT Click here for sample statements [all modalities] ACADEMIC HONESTY Saint Joseph’s University encourages the free and open pursuit of knowledge; we consider this to be a fundamental principle and strength of a democratic people. To this end, SJU expects its students, its faculty, its administrators, and its staff to uphold the highest standards of academic integrity. The University expects all members of the University community to both honor and protect one another’s individual and collective rights. The SJU Academic Honesty Policy, which is published both in the Student Handbook and in the University Catalog, will be strictly enforced. It is your responsibility to understand this policy. Use of unauthorized notes or assistance during an exam will result in at least failure of the assignment, if not failure of the course. Plagiarism will also result in at least failure of the assignment, if not failure of the course. Plagiarism occurs in any instance where one submits as one’s own work statements or ideas taken from another source but not properly acknowledged as such. Any material copied or derived from another source must be acknowledged by giving a reference. For direct quotes, always use quotation marks and provide a reference. If you paraphrase something, you must provide a reference to acknowledge where you found the material. Internet sources, if used, must be cited. BIAS INCIDENT REPORTING As a community, Saint Joseph’s University is committed to being diverse and inclusive, supporting all its members. We must not allow fear or our shared concerns to threaten our commitment to embracing diversity on our campus. Bias-based conduct, targeting people based on perceptions about identity or beliefs creates barriers to inclusion, access and trust. It affects not only the targeted individual or group, but also adversely affects our entire University community. Biased behaviors, stereotyping and discrimination are not tolerated at Saint Joseph’s University. As a Jesuit university, we set a high bar: to educate and care for the whole person, across all diversity and aspects of identity. Anyone who experiences harassment, discrimination or biased-based conduct on campus or virtually in a Universitysponsored activity can report it here through the Bias Activity Review Intake Portal. 3

Syllabus Read more about definitions and the process on SJU’s Bias Incident Reporting webpage. “The Saint Joseph’s University Non-Discrimination Statement prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex/gender, race, age of 40 or over, color, religion, national origin, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, genetic information, pregnancy, marital status, and military and military veteran status, and any other status protected by law in the administration of its admission, educational, financial aid, employment, athletic, or recreational policies or programs.”

HEALTH AND WELLNESS Saint Joseph’s University recognizes that physical and mental health strongly impact one’s ability to do well in school and in life. As a result, there are many helpful campus resources designed to help students to care for their physical, mental, and spiritual health. Students may experience stressors that can impact both their academic experience and their personal well-being. These may include academic pressure and challenges associated with relationships, mental health, alcohol or other drugs, identities, finances, etc. All of us benefit from support during times of struggle and challenges. If you are experiencing concerns, seeking assistance sooner rather than later is a courageous thing to do for yourself and those who care about you. The resources below can help you to cope with stress and to achieve your academic and personal goals. Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) provides free confidential mental health counseling for all Saint Joseph’s University students. Currently, CAPS therapists are conducting tele-mental health counseling for students via a secure version of Zoom. In addition, counselors are available after office hours and over weekends to attend to urgent mental health concerns. To access 24/7 mental health counseling, students can call the CAPS office at 610-660-1090. https://sites.sju.edu/counseling/ Additional Resources: · Fitness & Recreation- https://www.sju.edu/health-well-being/fitness-recreation · Student Success - https://sites.sju.edu/thesuccesscenter/student-success/ · Center for Inclusion and Diversity: https://sites.sju.edu/oid/ · Campus Ministry - https://sites.sju.edu/campusministry/
