GEOG20017 Server We have a Windows Virtual Machine (hosted in the Melbourne Research Cloud) that is available to support GEOG20017. This includes data processing and storage. You access it using a Remote Desktop connection (that is the only way to access it). It can be accessed from Windows, Mac or Linux machines (instructions below).

Instructions for use C:\Users: This contains folders that are locked to individual users. Your own user folder based on your UniMelb ID will automatically be created C:\Data: This is accessible to all users and will contain instructions and data for the practical class.

Connection instructions You can only connect from within the UniMelb network, so if you are off-campus you will need to first VPN (virtual private network) into the UniMelb network before trying to connect. Further information on UniMelb VPN: https://studentit.unimelb.edu.au/wireless-vpn/vpn The information you need to connect: • Server name / computer name: arcgis2.geography.unimelb.edu.au • User name: this will be your UniMelb login name • The password will be your normal UniMelb password

Connecting from Windows Press the Windows button in the bottom left and type “Remote Desktop Connection” to find the right application. Press the “Show options” button. Enter the computer name and user name using the information above. Optional settings: Display: If you are working from a laptop you may want to make the screen a bit smaller than the default. Local resources: You can share your local hard drive so that it is accessible as a network drive in Terminal Server. This is very useful for transferring files. Select the “More” button, expand the “Drives” option, and click on the box “Local Disk (C:)” to share it.

Connecting from Mac It appears that Mac users need the Microsoft Remote Desktop application from the Self Service Portal or the App Store: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/microsoft-remote-desktop-10/id1295203466?mt=12 Open the Microsoft Remote Desktop application Click the "+" icon Computer name / PC name: arcgis2.geography.unimelb.edu.au User name and password: as described above. For user name you may need to write it in the form unimelb\yourusername if you are on a BYOD.

Resolution: select a resolution suitable for your screen. You can select the “Redirection” tab to set up folder-sharing with your local hard drive.

Connecting from Linux Remmina is a remote desktop application for Linux and is automatically included in many distributions such as Ubuntu (or you can install it for free using your package manager). Click the “+” button in Remmina to add a new connection. Name: arcgis2.geography.unimelb.edu.au Protocol: RDP Leave other options at default values. Server, user name and password: as described above. Domain: unimelb Resolution: select a resolution that is suitable for your screen (e.g. 1280 x 960) Colour depth (suggestion): High colour (16 bpp) or Remote FX Share folder: This is very useful for transferring files. Select a folder you want to appear as a network folder from within your Terminal Server session. Save. Now you can double-click on that connection profile to initiate the Remote Desktop session....
