Laboratory Nº 1 Geology RECOGNITION OF MINERALS OBJECTIVES GENERAL PURPOSE Perform mineral recognition in a hand sample, by observing the physical properties that characterize it
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES Strengthen and apply concepts related to the physical properties of minerals, such as optical and some of the mechanical. Acquire skills in the identification of minerals
MATERIALS For the development of the practice must have the following elements: *Magnifying glass *Razor * Glass or mirror * Tile plate * Steel lace * Reference books or database Stripe of the nail: 2,5 Stripe of glass: 5.5 Currency line: 3 to 3.5 Steel lace: 5.5
PROCESS 1. Take the mineral and perform the identification of the physical properties (color, habit, line and brightness), write down the results in the table 2. Find the mechanical properties such as: hardness, exfoliation or fracture (if the mineral has it), write down the data. 3. Identify the mineral with the help of the teacher 4. Find out with the bibliographic resources or on the internet the other physical properties, the composition, the deposit, origin and uses. 5. Take another mineral and perform the above procedure.
