Description

Being German, I was super excited to learn about the German Lineage of Modern Dance. Before watching the documentary, I had no prior knowledge of what the German Lineage of Modern Dance was. It was to break free from the traditions of European Ballet and to find a deeper individual expression in dance. Some of the dancers focused on expression while the others focused on social and political issues. I really enjoyed how this documentary focused on individuals who have had a big impact on the German Lineage of Modern Dance. These dancers illustrated how they were able to express themselves the way they chose to dance. In Modern Dance, a dancer can choose different ways of going about expressing ones-self. With each dance performance, they were trying to illustrate and tell us something through this expressive art form. One person who stood out to me in this documentary was Mary Wigman. Mary Wigman “considered dance to be equal to music, and because of this belief, she was often creating dances that were done in silence” (module 3). In her dances, she often expanded her body within each movement and then would finish the movement in a shrinking going inward sense of motion. She believed that the more in which a person stretches their body, the more the dancer would have to dilute the situation. What this means is if I were to stretch my arms as far as they would go, and once it would reach its fullest extension, the arms would shrink into a tight hug of the body. As the World War I came into place, she sent her prize student; Hanya Holm, from Germany to New York to make a dance school. Hanya Holm had a huge impact on modern dance in America for she opened a school in New York called the New York Wigman School of Dance, was a choreographer on Broadway, and even began a summer dance program at the Colorado College. She was the reason why a school allowed students to major in dance; which first occurred at the Colorado College. I think this documentary was super fun and interesting. I really enjoyed how it showed what influenced the dancers as well as being able to see the dances be performed by the individuals. I really appreciated the political influences. One thing I love about this dance is it really allows people to express their emotions and to tell their own individual stories....
