LESSON 1: GLOBAL NETWO RKS NETWORKS PRELIMINARY ACTIVTY •

OFW's sending pictures of their workplaces abroad and providing information about the possible job opportunities in their company for other Filipino friends and relatives.

NOTE: Kailangan ng mga manggawa aborad. So pasok sya sa qualification ng pagiging global that it must cross boundaries. Ang pinaka- tie nila rito is job opportunities.

Academicians from different countries meeting and attending an international conference about new trends and issues in their respective fields.

NOTE: This is also an example of global network kasi pasok sya sa qualification na iba’t-ibang bansa ang nagsasama para madiscuss about new trends and issues.

Political activists from different countries organizing a rally against human rights violations committed by a dictatorial government

NOTE: This is a global network in a sense na hindi lang siya nangyari sa bansa but pati na rin sa mga politicial activities from different countries. Iba’t- ibang countries yung nagsasama-sama for common goal which is to end the human rights violation

Biologists and medical doctors from different research and development centers collaborating to develop a new vaccine against HIV-Aids.

NOTE: This is a global network. It’s more on networks of practitioners in the medical field. They are being held together to achieve a common goal, which is to develop a new vaccine against HIV/AIDS

NOTE: What do all scenarios have in common: (1) It’s according to world issues like (2) They all have common goal (3) They’re interrelated. Global Network – it’s about the interconnectedness of people to achieve a common goal. Being able to communicate and colloberate from different countries to achieve a goal.

WHAT IS A GLOBAL NETWORK? •

GLOBAL: an entity's reaches are beyond territorial borders of a particular country; thus, it destroys the cultural and economic barriers that separates regions and places.

NOTE: Meaning ‘di lang sya nakastay sa iisang lugar. One country is connected to more than one country with an entity members located in different places. Kailangan it should cross boundaries, not only physical boundaries but also cultural and and economics barrier. •

NETWORKS: A set of units like nerves, species, individuals, institutions, or states, with a particular rule which determines the degree or direction of relation or ties that exist between or among social entities or units.

NOTE: There’s a relationship between countries. •

Global Network can be defined as a set of units manifesting certain ties or relationships that exist and operate beyond territorial borders of a particular country.

NOTE: Para masabi na may global network between countries, there should be a relationship between the two to achieve a common goal. •

Global networks can be seen in different fields like business, migration, governance, terrorism, science, in professions, an even in different disciplines. It also includes network enterprises, electronic network technology, networks of political activists, and terror networks.

NOTE: Maraming fields na pwedeng magconnect sa mga bansa sa isa’t isa. Because of the presence global networks in the 21st century we can safely say that society is no longer isolated. We you say globalization, it is the coming together of different countries. Marami silang network para maging dahilan to become together. They’re merging with other societies. Globalization started as economic concepts because of trading. Lumago ng lumago hanggang nagging complicated na sya.

CHARACT ERISTICS OF A GLOBAL NETWORK CHARACTERISTICS 1. Global networks cross "borders" and connect to more than one country. NOTE: Yung meaning ng “country” sa number 1 is, yung members nyan is open located in different places and they’re always moving. Not literally “moving” but they’re conducting operations from one country to another. Nakahighlight yung word na “border”, because the boundaries being referred to here are not only material but symbolic boundaries as well. NOTE: It can also mean imagined border, it means that individuals navigate in their imagination and in forms that are associated with cultural expression EX: Philippiines. Isang bansa lang talaga tayo but people are creating imagined borders because of the difference of their culture. Our central government is mostly dominated by Christians because tayo ay nacolonize in 333 years but in the Mindanao area they were not colonized by any foreign rule that’s why sobrang grounded and solido yung kanilang kultura. Majority of them are mostly muslims. In short, people are creating imagined boundiries because of their cultural expression. NOTE: So inexplain lang nung number 1 is kailangan magcross ka dun sa mga imagined borders like ‘di lang nililimit sa sarili mong country yung culture or something. Parang willing kang magdadagdag ng panibagong organization or information from other countries.

2. Movement across a boundary is long term. NOTE: Movement across the boundaries is not yet considered as a global network. Kapag yung mga relationship ng mga bansa is short time lang/short period of time but macoconsider sya as global network if meron transnational migration or employment within an international organization over a long period of time. EX: Pumunta ka sa isang bansa for a short visit dahil sa isang event. ‘Yung example na ‘to ay not global network kasi it’s just temporary and short visit lang naman. NOTE: from my understanding, ang sinasaabi lang dito is kailangan panglongterm yun, kumbaga kapag nagattend ka ng event. Yung event na yun is laging ginaganap in a specific time and day or kaya yung event na yun is may long term effect sa tao. Kailangan ianalyse mo yung situation kung pang matagalan ba EX: (1) Pupunta si Hidilyn Diaz sa Tokyo for the 2021 Olympics for 1 week. Kahit na 1 week lang ‘to; every 4 years naman ‘tong ginaganap.. The act of representing the country is short term but if you’re going to look at the nature of the organization, it’s enduring kasi may purpose kung bakit nagsasama-sama ang bansa para magcompete. (2) United Nation/ European Union, Kahit 2 to 3 days yung pagsasama nila, it doesn’t mean na it would end there. Nagtutuloy t7uloy pa rin yung mga activities nila and di pang temporary yun, may long term effect sya.

3. Global networks are not confined within a particular country. NOTE: In global network, it’s not just isolated to a particular territory, the members of a global network are often located in different places or sometimes they are always moving to one place to another. And these networks or countries criss cross the world. It goes beyond the country’s borders, EX: Transnational corporation, intellectual; networks. They are always moving to the point na wala ng control yung tao ang they are not aware that their ideas are moving amd amg bilis nyang kumalat EX: Social movements, Organization like feminism, LGBTQ; it has surpass the boundaries and sovereigns of countries and nation states. Wala ng control ang soberanya sa pagkalat ng mga yan and it just moves; It’s not confined to a particular territory.

TYPES OF GLOBAL NETWORKS 1. TECHNICAL GLOBAL NETWORKS - form of global network adopted from telecommunications systems that utilize a variety of satellite, cable, and wireless technologies NOTE: Mas ginagamit ‘to sa field ng telecommunications.

2. INTERPERSONAL GLOBAL NETWORKS - a form of global network that includes cross-border groups such as migrants, aid, or social workers involved in advocacy work and even professional discussing and debating about new ideas and discoveries NOTE: This type of global networks relates to functional type of activity like for example advocacy, knowledge, Policy making, and business. Mas gamit ‘to kasi we are talking about network of countries not just networks of telecommunication.

NETWORKSS 12 TYPES OF GLOBAL NETWORK NOTE: Global Networks are multi-functional – meaning maraming functions ang mga networks na ‘to. So it’s very impractical to categorize certain networks into mutual selected group alone kaya may iba’t ibang networks dito and they may intersect and overlap in both function and activity. EX: Advocacy network yung dahilan kung bakit magkasama ang isa o dalawang bansa pero pwede rin na yung Samahan na yun not just advocacy network, pwedeng ibang network like friendship network or information network.

1. ADVOCACY NETWORKS made up of individuals called actors who share a particular value, common disclosure, and "dense exchanges of information and services” that work internationally on a particular issue.

NOTE: Pwedeng ang dahilan kaya magkakasama ang mga bansa or they are connected with one another is because of advocacy. These countries share particular value like for example pinagsama sila because of human rights advocacy, or because they are or because they are both environmentalists. Not just countries, pwedeng group of people or pinagsasama sila because of their goals like Feminism, or women’s human networks. They are together because of a common goal or advocacy and usually their advocacy is moving. ‘Di lang naka stay sa isang lugar

2. BUSINESS, TRADING, AND COMMERCIAL NETWORKS: transnational economic and business networks NOTE: Ito naman yung mga bansa na magkaugnay dahil sa kanilang business ventures EX: Commercial networks, Enterprise networks, and Innovation networks.

3. FRIENDSHIP NETWORKS: looks into social communication patterns, Interpersonal banding, and social support. NOTE: Ito yung movements across of people pursuing employment in general in migrant or cosmopolitan setting EX: Ofw, Pinapadala sa ibang bansa para magwork ng pangmatagalan.

4. IMPERIAL NETWORKS: Analysis of imperial empires NOTE: Ang pag-aaral ng Imperial networks are done by Historians kasi yung mga historians they study the recorded past events. So ang Historians they are the once who study facial patterns of connection that link with colonies. EX: We are connected with Spain because we were once their colony including Mexico and Cuba.

5. INFORMATION NETWORKS: global networks where communication is the primary function NOTE: So, this network develops as new technology of communication encounter a variety of function. Ang nagcoconnect sa dalawa ay Communication or technology from one country to another

6. KNOWLEDGE / INTELLECTUAL NETWORKS: give importance to the transmission of knowledge and its connection with policy development

NOTE: So in this regard, knowledge network intersect with advocacy and policy network cause there are group of people na nagsasama wither because of advocacy or knowledge and their main goal para matuto or para sa advocacy nila kasi yun yung nagpapatakbo ng Samahan nila.

7. MIGRANT NETWORK: deals with migrants who left the countries and settled in new territories NOTE: Ito pwede ‘tong magoverlap sa friendship network, Family network, ethnic or religious network. Basta ang pinaguusapan lang dito sa migrant network is community of migrants na nagsesettle from one country to another

8. POLICY NETWORK: a set of relatively stable relations that are non-hierarchical and interdependent in nature that links a variety of actors who have common interests with regard to a particular policy, and exchange resources to pursue these shared interests. NOTE: Ito yung international relations with different countries. Ex: China and Philippines. Meron tayong relation with them kasi may common interest tayo with China and may interest din yung China. Meron tayong nakukuha sa china like response in this pandemic (Vaccines). Nagkakaroon ng exchange resources to pursue this shared interest.

9. PROFESSIONAL NETWORKS: a type of network that deals with the promotion of the professionals' mental and academic interests to support sociability and friendship NOTE: Ito yung kapag nagsasama-sama yung tao based sa profession na meron sila EX: Network of engineers, not just in the Philippines but also in other countries, Ntworkd of proffesional doctors, teachers

10. RELIGIOUS NETWORKS: most of the literature on religious networks deal with religions practiced by immigrants and their respective networks NOTE: Most of these networks deals with Islamic networks because if you’re going to look at thye major religions in the world; ang pinakamaraming religion ay Islam. Kung di tayo nasakop ng Spain baka muslim din tayo kasi yung mga nakapaliboit sa’tin na bansa ay mostly Muslim yung religion but since tayo ay nachristianized kaya iba yung religion natin.

11. TERRORIST NETWORKS: focuses on the study of the structure of terrorist groupings which have parallelisms with the structure of multinational companies and organized crimes NOTE: Terrorist networks became a growing trend in global network scholarship with the aftermath of the 9/11 attack. Both terrorist networks and multi-national companies, they often use global economic transportation and communication systems na pasecret to organize and manage its affiliate and branches. Most of the time these networks are engage in organized crimes.

EX: ISIS – matindi ang kanilang networks kasi di moa lam kung sino, and saan yung target nila. ISIS is somehow may kinalaman sa issue nng religion between islams and catholic

12. WOMEN'S NETWORKS: some of these networks focus on women themselves while others involve women in networks alongside men. NOTE: Connected sya sa ibang network kagaya ng advocacy network and friendship network. These are community of women na nagsasama-sama because of a certain goal which is feminism or equality, kahit anong pinaglalaban ng mga kababaihan because?

EXAMPLE/REVIEW: GLOBAL NETWORK OR NOT GLOBAL NETWORK

1. Mr. Peter Co is a businessman who regularly attends meetings abroad in order to talk to his clients and suppliers. He usually stays in one country for two to three days to meet his clients and possible suppliers. NOTE: Not a Global Network. ‘di kasi long term, and short period time lang sya pumunta and wala syang long term effect kasi “possible supplier” lang naman, di naman sya fixed na supplier na once mineet mo sya is sya na agad magiging supplier mo for a long time.

2. Dr. Jane Peters is a forensic scientist who regularly attends forensic science conferences and congresses in different countries. She would usually stay in a particular country for a week or two to meet and discuss her research with other fellow forensic experts. NOTE: Global Network. Pasok sya sa criteria na 3. Although for week or two lang yung pag attend nya, it’s always done regularly naman. Kahit konti nlang umattend sa conference nya after nung meeting nayun it doesn’t stop the spread of the knowledge kasi malamang ishashare nila yan sa iba nilang mga collegue or other people

3. The president of the University of the Philippines attends an international conference of university 'heads and leaders in Bangkok, Thailand. NOTE: Not a Global Network cause simple meeting lang ‘to. Nagququalify lang sya sa criteria 1 pero sa ibang features hindi.

4. An international non-governmental organization in Southeast Asia that is tasked to monitor cases of human rights violation in the region is established. NOTE: Global Network. Pasok sya sa number 2 kasi nagentablished sila ng human rights violation which is magtatagal for a long time. And pasok din sya sa number 3 kasi di lang sila magmomonitor sa bansa nila kundi sa iba’t ibang bansa din. Also, nagsasama-sama sila for a particular goal

5. Filipino overseas workers were employed in Dubai, UAE as engineers in oil refineries for years. NOTE: Global Network. Pasok kasi sya sa criteria number 1 kasi sa ibang bansa and aalis ka sa borders mo or sa territory mo. Pasok sya sa criteria 2 kasi di lang sya temporary work and matagal sya. Pasok din sya sa 3 kasi they’re moving to another place and lilipat sila for a particular goal which is to work as engineers

6. The Islamic State (IS) operates in Belgium, France, and the United States and conducts terrorist activities in these countries. NOTE: Global Network.Paok sya number 1 kasi ‘di lang mag crocross border sila sa ibat’s ibang country. Pasok din sya sa 2 kasi yung terrorism is not temporary kasi di mo alam kung kalian sila titigil and matagal na syang nakaestablish. Pasok sya sa number 3 kasi nagsprespread or palipatlipat sila sa iba’t ibang country NOTE: Explanation of each criteria if it is a global network:

Criteria 1: “Cross borders” May connection from one country to another, physical man or imagined border. Tumutukoy din ito sa relationship dun sa one or more country Criteria 2: “Long term” (1 year and above) or regularly ginagawa and mageendure yung certain event na yun for a long time. Kumbaga tinitidnan lang dito kung tatagal ba yung operation or yung idea na inispread mo sa tao. Criteria 3: “Not confined within a particular country” it is not just isolated to a particular territory, thus it’s always moving. It often criss-cross the world because of the idea or the operation that even the sovereign country and nation state they don’t have any control. In short, ito yung tumutukoy dun sa areas of operation, ano yung mga ginagawang activities ng mga country na yun and kung paano sya kumakalat or nagiispread

LESSON 2: INT INTRODUCTION RODUCTION TO GLOBALIZ GLOBALIZATION ATION WHAT IS GLOBALIZATION? •

Comes from the word "globe" which means the worldwide coming together of nations and countries.

The worldwide movement of people and ideas, money, goods, data, drugs, weapons, computer and biological viruses, greenhouse, gases, and more.

A process by which people and countries can exchange information and goods more quickly and in a less complicated way.

NOTE: Ito yung pagsasama-sama at pagbubuklod ng mga bansa sa isa’t isa. This means that people and countries can exchange information and goods more quickly. Globalization is a phenomenon that unites countries from different parts of the globe. That process na pagexchange ng tao ng information and goods is called globalization

NOTE: Noon pa man nageexchange na ng good ng ideas. Ito yung silk road – this is network of trade route stretching to the mediterrian sea to east asia

CULTURAL EXCHANGE AND SILK ROAD

NOTE: There is an exchange of fabrics, spices, art, weapons, teachnology, disease and ideas. Not just in good but also culture •

SCALE, VELOCITY AND RANGE OF DICLOSE ACROSS BORDERS

NOTE: Noon, the flow of ideas and goods in the silk road is not that face. Because of advance of technology such as mobile phones, telephones, and internet it has made the route of transportation in communication network. Speed of disease – mabilis syang magspread EX: Corona Viruses Smartphone – there’s a global coordination it took to produce that phone.

The interconnectedness of the modern world allows ideas, behaviors, styles, products, styles, and news to spread more quickly and broadly than any another pe...
