Interpretation of the Brief

This investigation report will aim to provide research and analyse results based on the principles of training which underpin the effectiveness of performance in football. Principles of training maintain the most effective ways that can be used in order to improve upon physical fitness in sport or physical activity. This has been proven by using both the muscular and energy systems in conjunction with one another to achieve the optimum physical state/ability level required for an elite athlete. Each principle provides a different element in which contributes to the overall performance of the athlete. Said principles are used frequently in training prior to events/competitions in order to maximise skill execution and success. The brief highlights the necessary information required to carry out the project, i.e. location of both qualitative and quantitative resources, an action plan with timescales for all research requirements and a contingency plan set in place to prevent setbacks in the report.

3

Aims and Objectives

Aim: 

To investigate the contributing factors to hamstring injuries within football.

Objectives: 

To research how previous injury contributes to hamstring injuries in football.

4

To investigate how hip ROM impacts on the hamstring injury.

To discuss how age impacts the hamstring muscle injuries.

Key Factors/Issues Influencing the Investigation

Unable to Stick to Deadlines/Action Plan If the action plan is not met to date then then investigation could become messy and not up to standard. This barrier would limit the report and could seem rushed, resulting in other modules resulting as an impact of this.

Potentially Busy Interviewees Interviewees may become unreliable due the sports coach and therapist also being lecturers at a college as well as their external jobs in industry, so will have very busy schedules. To prevent this, dates have been set in advanced with both interviewees and have been confirmed by them that said dates are convenient to them as well as the interviewer. If these dates become unavailable, a contingency plan is in place to do the interviews the week later. Biased Data Due to interviews with the coach and therapist being opinion based, this may not be entirely accurate findings. Not every athlete, coach or therapist will apply the same principles to their training and performance methods. A strategy to avoid this will be to find related information within secondary sources to back up the information and answers given by interviewees. Sports Coach and Therapists The sports coach and therapist professionals that are being interviewed may maybe be difficult to track down on basis of this report, or specialist knowledge on the subject matter. This would create a barrier and prevent the primary information from being accurate. A solution for this in order to receive relevant information was to get in contact with the coach and therapist with a few quick questions to ensure their knowledge in these areas was going to be useful.

5

Reasoning for Topic Choice

This subject matter was chosen due to it being an interest to the author as they had an occurrence of this injury during their personal life in training. This report would also broaden their knowledge on the topic and further benefit the understanding when applying it in a personal setting during rehab. Pathology and massage are subjects found in year 1 of the HND Sports Therapy course, therefore these units are relevant when supplying the author with a basic understanding on the principles required when completing this report.

6

Data Collection and Rationale Behind Methods of Research

Both primary and secondary research will used throughout the project. The primary research will include qualitative data from a both a sports coach and sports therapist, the coach for the performance aspect and the therapist for musculoskeletal systems aspect. Both of said interviewees are qualified and are still currently working in industry. A survey will also be available on SurveyMonkey in order to gather further information from football players specifically about their injuries, age and ROM, and how this has impacted their injury. This form of gathering information is inexpensive and easily accessible due to the interviewees being in close contact with the author. This type of research also comes first-hand and both interviews and surveys can be used to back each other up. The report will also consist of secondary data in the form of research from journals, articles and books. These will consist of articles written by industry leaders in subjects such as anatomy, pathology and rehabilitation. These articles will also be peer assessed by bodies such as the British Journal of Sports Medicine. This type of research is factual, and statistics make it reliable and accurate as a source. However, this second-hand information is recycled and documented in a different format thus it is already available to the public. Quantitative data provides factual sources such as journals, newspaper articles and books. Quantitative sources are reliable as they provide statistics about the chosen topic from information given that will have been refereed and checked by professionals in the specific field of industry. Qualitative data is the quality of opinion. This will give a variety of angles to come from when considering the report aim. This can come from interviews, questionnaires and surveys. This form of data is current and up to date, coming from professionals in that field thus making it reliable and accurate. Using both of these methods are comparable against one another through either contrasting or supporting.

7

Location of resources and materials required

Most of the research for this project will be gathered through online journals and articles that can be found in the City of Glasgow College Library. This includes, Sport discuss, Medline and Google Scholar. Anatomy and physiology books will also be used to gather information as well as speaking to a sports therapist and sports coach from City of Glasgow College. The writer is also currently signed up on the Stirling University and Glasgow University portals through friends in order to get a wider range of journals and articles written by industry leaders in subjects such as anatomy, pathology and rehabilitation to gain information on the injury itself and how it can be influenced as well as rehabilitated. A kindle fibre also allows a subscription account on amazon books. Books have been purchased in a number of different areas in exercise principles and coaching to help gain knowledge on that side on one of the objectives. Ethical Reasoning 8

To avoid plagiarism when collecting information by referencing all resources appropriately. Data protection will also be considered as, in this case, information gathered from the coach and therapist should be kept confidential and private. This will not be released until permission is given by the interviewees. Step by Step Action Plan

Contingency Plan In case of difficulties the author will have a backup therapist and coach that they can arrange an interview with if the interview with chosen one is unable to go ahead. In the circumstance that the author is unable to attend the interview due to issues such as transport etc. questionnaires will be organised to give out to the interviewees as a primary source. If the author is unable to continue with the chosen topic another topic will be used. This topic will be based on rehabilitation focused on an injury.

Aim: To establish the most effective way of rehabilitating an anterior talofibular ligament tear in the early stages.

Objective 1: -

To investigate the benefits of strength and how it aids in rehabilitating an ATFL injury.

Objective 2: -

To analyse the effects of proprioception and research whether it works effectively.

Objective 3: 

12

To research the effect of muscular endurance and how it helps rehabilitate an ATFL injury in its early stages....
