Description

GREEN REVOLUTION

GREEN REVOLUTION • The green revolution was a period when the productivity of global agricultural increased drastically as a result new advances • It associated with chemical fertilizers, agrochemicals, controlled water suply and also include mechanisation • One key leader was NORMAN BORLAUG , the FATHER OF GREEN REVOLUTION • The basic approach was the development of high yielding verieties to farmers • The term GREEN REVOLUTION was first used by WILLIAM S GAUD

• During this time period new chemical fertilizers, synthetic herbicides and pesticides were created • The chemical fertilizers made it possible to supply ceops with extra nutrients and therefore increase yield • High yield crops are crops that are specifically designed to produce more overall yield • A method known as multiple cropping was also implemented during the green revolution and lead to higher productivty

HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT OF GREEN REVOLUTION • The beginning of the green revolution are often attributed Norman Borlaug • He bugun conducting research in Mexico and developed new disease resistance high yield varieties of wheat • By combining Borlaug’s wheat varieties with new mechanized agricultural technologies , the production increased • Due to the success of green revolution in Mexico, it’s technologies spread worldwide in the 1950 and 1960s

PLANT TECHNOLOGIES OF THE GREEN REVOLUTION • The crops developed during green revolution were high yield varieties • The domeaticated plant bred specifically to respond to fertilizers and produce an increased amount of grains per acre planted • During green revolution plants that had the largest seeds were selected to create the most production possible • These large seeds then created more grain yield and a heavier above ground weight

BENEFITS OF GREEN REVOLUTION • Introduction of fertilizers, pesticide, synthetic herbicides, high yield crops and the method multiple cropping was able to produce much Larger quantity of food • It made it possible to grow more crops on roughly the same amount of a land with a similar amount of effort • Reduced production cost and also results in the cheaper price for food in the market • It provides us with consistent yields during uncooperative seasons • It has reduced the issues of deforestation on our planet

DISADVANTAGES OF GREEN REVOLUTION • It created a lack of biodiversity in the global cropland structures • It reduced the quality of the soil used for growing crops • It require expensive investment which promote inequality between farmers • It depends on fertilizer subsides • It require the use of non sustainable agricultural methods • It encourages more resistance to pest, chemicals and other hazards
