28 March 2018 Questions 1-7 1. Note how the first page is formatted, particularly the heading and the title. How many spaces are used between each line? a. One space is used between each line. 2. In the first paragraph, the author of the essay, Michael De Souza, does not cite the fact that Jacob Lawrence was raised in Harlem and lived there in the 1930s. Why does he not cite this information? (Hint: Look at the title of the course.) a. The reason he does not cite this information is that his audience is towards people who might already know the background information of Jacob Lawrence. Also, this course covers the Harlem Renaissance, or another era’s during the time of the 1930s that African American figures thrive out of. 3. What is De Souza’s thesis statement? a. “ I argue that Lawrence shows several economic factors, such as difficult farming conditions in the South and greater job opportunities in the North, as providing the basis for the mass movement, but I also think that he shows hope and ambition as playing an important role.” 4. What is the topic of paragraph 2? What is its purpose in this essay? a. The topic of the paragraph is about the Great Migration and what historians think about it. The reason for this having a purpose in the essay is because the readers need to know the background of how everything started. Economic leaders played an important role in the Great Migration but also African Americans took things seriously were very ambitious in finding a better life for themselves. 5. In paragraph 2, De Souza uses a quote. Where is that quote from? What type of source is this? Why did De Souza probably go to a source like this to find background information? a. “He had never visited the South when he completed the Migration series in 1941, but he was surrounded by migrants and heard their stories throughout his childhood (Turner,

Introduction).” This quote is from Jacob Lawrence: The Migration Series. This type of source is a textbook discussing the history and analysis of art and photography. The reason De Souza probably went to this source to find background information is to understand the history, analysis of Lawrence’s paintings, including what Lawrence portrayed and what he wanted his audience to take away from each painting. 6. Why does De Souza reject—at least partially—the concept of “push” and “pull” factors? a. De Souza rejects the concept of “push” and “pull” factors because he feels as if they are describing the migrants as weak, desperate, and incapable of acting on their own. De Souza finds it very insulting to only describe the migrants to only being pushed and pulled. 7. Whom does De Souza mention as also being against using these terms? Why is De Souza wise to mention this person—what credibility does this person bring to the essay? a. De Souza uses the person James Grossman to let readers know that he has a form of expertise in the African American Studies, but also that Grossman has valuable credibility in critiquing the history and historical pieces of this an era. The Chicago Defender goes against using the terms “push” and “pull” factors because they believe that people migrated in other reasons because they wanted a better lives for themselves, knowing that they are starting from scratch and having the thought of free will and not having a “push” or “pull” to do so....
