Felicia Batts Instructor Starks October 28, 2018 BHS 240 Community Group Therapy and Support Groups In the Tri-Cities area, there are various agencies that provide services as outlined by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS). Each of these agencies purpose is to implement treatment plans for the betterment of the client lives through educating and assisting in improving mental and physical health. Group therapy and support groups are amongst the services available to clients. Group therapy and support groups are utilized based upon the client issue and needs in order to incorporate growth through knowledge and education. District 19 Community Services Board is the entryway for those experiencing mental health/substance abuse issues to receive the assistance they need including group therapy and support groups. District 19 Community Services Board provides group therapy through a service called psychosocial rehabilitation services. The psychosocial Rehabilitation program takes place in a nonresidential setting for two or more hours per day to a group of adults that present a clinical need because of mental, behavioral, or emotional condition that can impair functionality in life activity. This program provides education to teach clients about mental illness, substance abuse, and appropriate medication to avoid complication and relapse as well as opportunities to learn and use independent skills and enhance social and interpersonal skills. (D19) As Cromack states, “Group therapy allows individuals to enter into the therapeutic process with others who have the same or similar problems. This gives an individual much more freedom of expression as well as the support of others from within the group.” (Cormack, 2013) A person would choose to

join this group to have more support from others and increase their knowledge. This group would be led by qualified personnel who is a nonmember and supervised by someone with QMHP-A credentials as determined by DBDHS. I would refer a client to this service definitely for those who meet the qualifications and want to attend the service to be able to receive additional support for their condition. Group therapy in Psychosocial Rehabilitation can be beneficial if participation is involved with all participants to receive insight from each other and learn from the leader. District 19 Community Services Board also offers a substance use disorder support group called The Gorski Relapse Prevention Program. This program spans over sixteenweeks, meeting one day a week, offering morning or evening classes. The focus of the program is on relapse and prevention modules that address issues of abstinence and sobriety. This group is designed to explore foundations to establish rationale for prevention by crisis stabilization, recovery outlooks and development of support systems to deter use. This program is based on theory taught from a therapeutic and educational perspective addressing early stages associated with use and experimentation. (D19) “The goal must be to manage relapse across the lifespan of each patient by preventing it where possible and stopping it quickly should it occur.”(Behavioral, 1999) A person would choose to join this group to have support while dealing with addiction to prevent relapsing. I would and have referred this program to clients who battle with substance use and want the help. This group would be led by qualified personnel who is a nonmember and meet the educational requirements as determined by DBDHS. Being in a substance support group, the participation can be voluntary or involuntary therefore the participation can vary. However, if the client participates in the program it can deem beneficial to them and with completion of the program, they are referred to other programs for continuous support.
